Tolerance of gender -including eunuch.

Post by daifu-orchid (imported) »

We just had a visit from a couple of very big and earnest guys from a local Baptist church, who insisted that we sign a petition of zero tolerance for tg/ts, particularly in schools and our town.

Their enthusiasm would not have been out of place at the Salem trials, as was their line of reasoning -or lack of any such. They kept on repeating that the Good Book says it's wrong and so it should be stopped, and any who think otherwise have no place in the town. Many had signed, maybe under duress.

We decided not divulge my eunuch status.... mostly out of fear for safety.

We love US for the tolerance of plurality of life; this visit seems more in keeping with the current rising intolerance of public discourse.

Eunuchs and all have a place.

Isn't the something written probably in the same book about ALL being created in their gods image that they might have missed.

Although I'm agnostic I do believe if everyone treated each other in the same way as they would like to be treated themselves then we would all get on just fine.

Although I would make an exception to the above rule if those two called at my place.

I am sorry to hear of this experience, intolerance of others does seem on the increase and there are many reasons for it. Basically it is hatred, fear, jealousy or mistrust of the "other". Intolerance is often expressed as religious teaching since it easy to deflect ones own misgivings into group belief. Education, one would suspect, should be the answer but what doctrine should be taught to ensure tolerance of other doctrines? I am coming to think we should spend a lot more time educating people about the phenomenal gaps in our knowledge. We should be making clear how little evidence there is for much that is vaunted to be the truth, and how much we though of as truth has proved to be wrong. Maybe if people had less courage in their convictions they would be more hesitant to act on them and more tolerant of an alternative view. If people were taught to question things more logically and judge things more clearly on the evidence available there would be a more stable society. Of course belief systems help to stabilise society and give comfort to people and I see no reason to undermine anyone's personal faith, however in dealing with others a more logical and educated approach would lead to more tolerance rather than quoting a doctrine, the very foundations of which they may never have thought to consider in a logical, evidence based manner. Rather than teaching what to think we should teach people a better method of arriving at a particular viewpoint that is logically defendable and at the same time open to change as new evidence becomes available. I am probably wrong in this though :)

Someone comes knocking on my door spouting that trash, I'm going to tell them to go away and not come back until they have their heads surgically removed from their asses.

I always ask someone like that what chapter and verse they are referring to.

Back 25 years ago I went thru one of those times where I was downsized, my dog died and I finally had filed for divorce because my wife had become too compulsize a gambler. As part of trying to find my way thru that, I ended up going to every church in town. At the Baptist Church, the county recorder got up and gave a guest sermon that Jews were souless devils who were worse than animals. I was offended (I like a lot of animals better than Baptists) and never went back. To the religion's defense though, I have mentioned that to a VERY few people I have met who were Baptists and all were visibly uncomfortable with it and said that they had never heard anything remotely like that.

I wouldn't worry about them. They probably don't know what eunuchs are, or who the eunuchs in the Bible were.

Two buildings away we have some young men from the Church of Latter Day Saints. They are always trying to involve me in conversation. They have this picture of a white, blond hair and blue eyed guy. Due to my depression I am always looking forward to get into it with someone. I asked who was the dude on their patio door. They were shocked that I would have to ask. They said that is our Savior Jesus. I said "Oh no Jesus was a dark skinned Middle Eastern Jew and he would have had olive skin, dark hair and dark eyes." Now that I think about it I need to ask how they stand on gay rights and transgender support.

If I lived on your side of the pond I would be more than happy to come round and lump them one.
