Warm Bodies

Post by bobover3 (imported) »

"Warm Bodies" is a new movie I recommend. It's a novel take on zombies. The hero is a young good-looking (for a zombie) zombie whose thoughts we hear. He's aimless and lonely, shuffling purposelessly among the other zombies. Most of the world has been consumed by zombies, and there is only one human settlement left, surrounded by high walls.

The hero meets a young woman after eating her boy friend's brain, unknown to her. It's zombie love at first sight. He saves the young woman's life, and finds ways to stay with her for several days. Slowly, painfully, he begins to speak to her and to start a relationship of sorts. Frightened at first, the woman feels growing affection for her zombie protector. The friendship of the young zombie and the young woman becomes the nucleus for the rebirth of the world. Seeing him, most of the other zombies recover their lost humanity and become almost normal. Seeing her, most of the other humans give up their fear of zombies and become accepting. Happy end. It's Romeo and Juliet, except that the star-crossed lovers live to reconcile their families.

"Warm Bodies" is an extraordinary combination of monster movie and romance, alternately scary and heart warming. It's this alternation of tone that makes the movie such a success. The romance saves it from the ashen sobriety of most monster movies; the monster movie saves it from the excess sweetness of most romances. It's sweet-and-sour pork for the cinema.

Lots of fun. Well worth seeing.

The movie was fun. It didn't make much sense that this one encounter would bring all the zombies back to life, but who ever said a zombie movie was supposed to make sense?

I think I would have preferred a story in which love saved this one boy rather than the whole world.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. The story had potential. I don't think the movie lived up to that potential.

Moi, please eat my pork roll.

Slammr, I think most critics agreed with you. I rather liked the ambition of the story. A love that redeems humanity is a grand love indeed.
