Slavery may be illegal in the "Western World', but it still exists, underground of course, not in the open like during the pre-civil war days. And not necessarily in the buying and selling of slaves, but in domination, control, and even kidnappings and imprisonment. It occurs in the occasional family unit, or more common in young women from impoverished countries who are duped into coming to America for "a better life", but wind up in secret slave factories. From time to time immigration discovers them. No way to know how many exist from day to day; obviously if we knew, they would be put out of business.

Contrary to popular belief in the U.S., slavery is alive and well in the world. I’ve been a member of Anti-Slavery International since 1965, when I first became aware of contemporary slavery in Saudi Arabia. I had an Arabic language tutor (age 19) who returned from a visit to his family to brag about his family’s new slave – a young eunuch of about 12 years of age.

ASI (antislavery.org) is the current name of the Anti-Slavery Society that was founded in England in 1823. They were instrumental in the banning of the slave trade in the British Empire by 1838 and provided support for Abolitionist activity in the United States leading up to the Civil War. They are STILL very active in countries where slavery is to be found. Their current campaign is against slavery in Niger, where there are an estimated 43,000 slaves in a population of 16 million people.

Their current estimate is that there are about 27 million slaves in the world, with the largest number in South Asia, but also in many other areas.

The U.S. State Department gives a lower number, but agrees that slavery is widespread. The United Nations has failed to take up the issue as it impacts too many important countries.

One of the documents released by Wikileaks speaks to slavery in Saudi Arabia. The U.S. consul in Jeddah wrote of a party, attended by several young Saudi princes of the royal family, that they were each attended by their “khawi.” Khawi is then defined in a footnote in the document:

It is common practice for Saudi princes to grow up with hired bodyguards from Nigeria or other African nations who are of similar age and who remain with the prince well into adulthood. They are called "khawi," derived from the Arabic word "akh," meaning "brother." The lifetime spent together creates an intense bond of loyalty.

In other words, each of the Saudi princes has his very own African “companion” who is “hired” into lifetime employment as a little boy of age 8 or 9. He is transported from West Africa to serve in a Saudi palace, growing up primarily in the women’s quarters. There are photographs available online of young Saudi princes of about 8 or 9 with their attendant khawi of a similar age.

I have tried to find out more, but so far have no more information than that there are at least 3,000 of them in Saudi service.

Are they slaves? I would certainly class them as such. Little boys of 8 or 9 can’t possibly sign on to lifetime employment otherwise.

Are any of them eunuchs? Growing up in the women’s quarters? What would be your guess?

"white slavery" refers primarily to the sale of prostitutes. one of the most active places for this is eastern europe. girls are purchased(or stolen) from their families, then they're 'broken'(doesn't take much, since they've got low expectations of life) & then sold on to their 1st pimp. they now owe a 'debt' to the pimp, who takes most of what they earn to cover interest and pay it off. the tricks here are; one, interest on the debt is VERY high, and two, once the debt is mostly paid off the pimp then "sells her debt" to another pimp(usually in another city). somehow the money she's paid on her debt fail to get credited to after this sale. two steps forward, two steps back. freedom only comes with death or being too old & worn out to make a profit for their pimp. then, they're kicked out onto the street.

on a side note, this form of slavery doesn't thrive in north america, since local girls(even runaways) know that they've got options. a simple & effective one is to secretly save up for a bus ticket & move to another city. local 'breakers' have to put in a LOT more effort into North Amercian girls to condition them against running away. since this creates a personal bond of dependancy beteween the girl and her 'breaker', selling the girl on to another pimp often doesn't work very well. usually, in N. A., 'white slavery' involves bringing girls from 2nd & 3rd-world countries. there's extra risks & charges involved in this, expecially as local law enforcement isn't as spotty as it is in poorer countries.

While it's only a guess, I would say that poor parents probably "sell", rather, "contract" their sons for this bodyguard duty for some monetary compensation. I'm sure they're working in some legal loopholes there.
