Happy St. Patrick's Day

What Shall I Say About the Irish?

The utterly impractical, never predictable,

Sometimes irascible, quite inexplicable, Irish.Strange blend of shyness,

pride and conceit,

And stubborn refusal to bow in defeat.

He's spoiling and ready to argue and fight,

Yet the smile of a child

fills his soul with delight.

His eyes are the quickest to well up with tears,

Yet his strength is the strongest

to banish your fears.

His hate is as fierce as his devotion is grand,

And there is no middle ground

on which he will stand.

He's wild and he's gentle,

he's good and he's bad.

He's proud and he's humble,

he's happy and sad.

He's in love with the ocean,

the earth and the skies,

He's enamoured with beauty wherever it lies.

He's victor and victim, a star and a clod,

But mostly he's Irish—

in love with his God.

And in a grand St Patrick's day practice, green beer is flowing freely in most bars in Western PA for everyone turns Irish on St Pat's day, including the Polish American Club and the Italian Sons and Daughters of Italy.

They all drink to St Patrick and the Irish.

I look forward to visiting Ireland one day. Maybe we can find some family. I loved when I visited Quebec City and learning how helpful they were to the Irish. They truly welcomed the Irish to North America.

Happy Day of Greento all!

My own Irish ancestors included both Catholic and Protestant. While I was still teaching, I always celebrated the day with a bright GREEN shirt and a bright ORANGE necktie.

There is a fine story in the Fiction Archive to celebrate the day:

The Young Patrician, by Pueros

(https://eunuchworld.co/s4328)Pueros is a historian and he once wrote to me that there is NOTHING in the story that is contradicted by historical records and that his story is more accurate than what is presented in many popular histories of the realm.
