Family flees urban home after boy mutilated

A KwaZulu-Natal father and his blind wife have fled their home near Durban after their four-year-old son's penis was almost cut off by two older boys.

At their ancestral home in Ndwedwe yesterday, the child clung to his father as the man relived the horror of finding his son in a hospital more than six hours after the boy went missing from their Inanda home last week.

"I rushed to the clinic and found my son. He was crying in pain. I was told that his penis was cut," he said. The boy's hair had been shaved, leaving bald spots on his head.

"I was too afraid to tell my wife that he was injured," said the father. "I knew she would be heartbroken so I let the police tell her."

While police began gathering evidence, the father tried to get details of what had happened from his son. At first, the child refused to speak, but days later he said two boys he did not know had come up to him while he was playing with children in the neighbourhood.

"The children took him to another section in the area where they used a pair of scissors to shave his head and cut his penis," the father said. "They would have killed him but they were disturbed. They started to cut his penis off but were interrupted.

"I just hope the police make arrests. I want a proper investigation," the father said.

He and his wife fled with their three young children before police could ask further questions.

The boy's grandmother wiped away tears as she told how she had demanded that the family move back to Ndwedwe.

"I am shocked. Who would do this to a little boy?" she said. "I told [the boy's father] that he cannot live in a place where he has enemies. This is his father's home and there are no enemies here."

The man had moved to Inanda a year ago to get a better job. But yesterday he said: "I never want to go back there again. The children are not safe there. This is my home and I am safe here."

Doctors told him his son would make a full recovery but would be in pain for a few days.

"As a father, I am hurt. I am angry and shocked."

KwaZulu-Natal spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge said police were investigating the case.

It just shows you that no matter where you are in the world cruilty to children happens,i realy feel sorry for this child and realy do hope that he will go on to lead a normal life.

How must have his family have felt,to find out that it was not an adult who attacked his child,but in fact it was other children who did this.
