Dave craps on another movie
Perhaps this will just be a recurring theme... I'll use this thread for any movie review.
15 May 2010 -- my free HBO (a bribe from Comcast) showed THE HANGOVER and if you like four misogynistic, idiotic drunks and just plain asshole-lian goofiness from what should be adults. Here's your movie. It ain't Shakespeare, it ain't even HAROLD AND KUMAR, which had some minor redemptive qualities, it's the new exploit movie -- lets exploit idiots with dicks. I did laugh at them.
15 May 2010 -- Earlier, AMC repeated IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. I love those old movies and Ethel Merman's panty girdle made its appearance right on schedule. totally superior idiots in this flick. Five thumbs up.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
Hmmmm, that's a very interesting crap you just dumped there on "The Hangover." Would you mind if I also crapped on that movie?
I have to agree with you Dave, "The Hangover" just plain SUCKED, and not in a good way. It was just one really stupid and improbable catastrophe followed by another stupid and improbable catastrophe, followed by another... well you all get the idea. I thought the cameo appearance of Mike Tyson would help, it didn't. Just totally STUPID. I feel that the time I wasted watching "The Hangover" was just totally a loss.
As for the "four (INCREADIBLY STUPID) misogynistic guys" angle, I felt like it was a REALLY STUPID AND LAME ATTEMPT to be politically correct, and show how anyone who is not a super-politically-correct, ultra-sensitive, man-hating moron must be just a drunk misogynistic moron who invariably must come crawling up to the sainted woman in his life and beg forgiveness ("We're not worthy! We're not worthy!")
In three short words, [F]THAT MOVIE SUCKED![/FONT]

Re: Dave craps on another movie
In LA they built a brand new theater to show Its a Mad mad mad mad world. I went with my gf at that time, we laughed so hard we needed intermission just to catch our breath. that movie had you laughing from the time Jimmy D, kicked the bucket until Ethel Merman slipped on the banana peel. With all the laughs in that movie, I think Jonathan Winters destroying the brand new gas station was the best, or was it Jerry Lewis running over the hat. Still brings a smile.
Thanks for the memory.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
I enjoyed visiting the Palm Springs CA area last November and seeing many of the sites they used when they filmed Mad Mad World. The "ramp" they built for the stranger to launch his car off the cliff at the beginning of the movie is still there on the side of California State Route 74, just outside of Palm Desert, CA.

It's in the really twisty section of road adjacent to the big green area on the side of that map.
There is even a web site dedicated to "then and now" photos of specific road location shoots for the movie.

Enjoy!

Re: Dave craps on another movie
There's a story here -- Sure they built a new movie house as River says -- and WHY? This was the first Cinerama film using anamorphic lenses (Ultra Panavision 70). Single lens Ultra Panavision 70 projection was to the regular movie screen as the IMAX movies that are produced today. Sadly, I don't think that they ever reassembled the "roadshow" version of the film. Roadshow versions of film are reserved seating with intermissions and souvenir programs. Think about that in your multiplex.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
As a kid I remember my father coming home with tickets for Ben Hur playing at the Egyptian on Hollywood Blvd. it has just come out and we had tickets for week 54. Yes, in those days a big film opened up in one place for a year or two before it went city or nation wide. Today they get all the bucks they can in a couple weeks then put it on a DVD (Avatar). This was also true for How the west was won, around the world in 80 days, the ten commandments, and others, but by the mid 60s that was over. I like going to the movies today, the new theaters have seats that recline, the person in front of you is 4 ft below you so there head is not in the way, the picture and sound are great, all in all a much better experience.
The good old days they can keep, I for one cant wait for tomorrow, what new and exciting new gadget will they come up with that everybody can't live without, Like a robot that cleans and cooks.
Now where did I leave that set of books by Azimov?
It is the foundation of our future you know?

Re: Dave craps on another movie
Do you remember what movie ended continuous showings?
For those too young to remember, theaters were open at 11am or 12 noon and then the movie ran continuosly until closing - usually 10pm or 11pm. Cartoons, previews and short subjects were set in between the movie and if you came in the middle, no one cared if you sat through to where you saw it to see the entire film. They didn't empty the theater between showings because they seated people partway through the movie. Even the epic length movies were shown this way. That's why first run movies with set times and reserved seatings were so special. \
BTW - balcony popcorn was unpopped and thrown off the balcony during Saturday matinees. Goobers (chocolate covered raisins bounce when they hit bald heads.
Now one film changed this all. And that was in 1960 -- Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO
It used these tag lines:
* No One ... BUT NO ONE ... Will Be Admitted To The Theatre After The Start Of Each Performance Of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho
* It Is _Required_ That You See Psycho From The Very Beginning!
* Don't give away the ending - it's the only one we have!
I remember the posters in front of the theaters:
Every theater that showed the film had a cardboard cut-out installed in the lobby of Alfred Hitchcock pointing to his wristwatch with a note from the director saying "The manager of this theatre has been instructed at the risk of his life, not to admit to the theatre any persons after the picture starts. Any spurious attempts to enter by side doors, fire escapes or ventilating shafts will be met by force. The entire objective of this extraordinary policy, of course, is to help you enjoy PSYCHO more. Alfred Hitchcock" From IMDB
I remember people talking in hushed whispers about the shower scene. (I was ten and considered too young for that scene).
And that event showed theater owners that they could set start and end times and clear the theaters between each showing.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
I do remember, which triggered yet another walk down memory lane, it was 1972 I wanted to see a movie and another was showing with it, (double feature), anyway this other movie was already going and I did not care if I saw it from the start, it was not the movie I went to see, so I get into my seat and these people were in a big room with a Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling, then they started climbing the tree to escape. It was about 20 minutes later that they finally showed this boat upside down in the water, I said "OH, there in a boat" which got a lot of laughs. I watched the other movie, don't remember which one it was, but I watched the Poseidon Adventure then from the start again all the way through to the end. I have looked through the movies of 1972 and have no idea what I saw with it.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
Oh my gosh... River, The Poseidon Adventure was tragic for me!
In 1979, I was 10 years old, and the movie was shown on T.V.
My mom and dad were skeptical about me watching it, but I really wanted to see it, as many of my friends were staying up to watch it.
I already had a fear of drowning, and I became utterly, totally terrified watching that movie. Couldn't sleep that night, had nightmares for days after.
Mom, from that day on, regulated my television and movie-going to such an extent it became embarrassing, for many years after that!
Funny to look back on... I've watched far more terrifying stuff since, but to this day, any sinking-ship movie creeps me out and I won't watch it.

Re: Dave craps on another movie
I ahve some personal things to do tonight and I was channel surfing to find a movie that would last until I got done with something distasteful & unmentionable.
LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was on FX and I thought, gee I've never seen that.
WRONG! I did see it and promptly forgot it.
Now that not good for a movie. Forgot the plot. forgot the action sequences. forgot the story until I saw 30 seconds of it.
Nothing like a memorable film to entertain the masses... (That was sarcasm).
And I came back to say this: My last bout of jock itch was more memorable. ANd no offense to Bruce Willis. I like him.
