System problems with VB

Post by kristoff »

I apologize for the difficulties we have been having with the Vbulletin forums lately. We have been trying to upgrade our software and have been running into all kinds of glitches. We did so again today.

Essentially, when upgrading, we get “so far” when the system tells us there is a fatal error. At that point, we can’t “go back” directly whence we came and use the old system. That would be downgrading and VB prevents that. The result is, the program has to be deleted, reinstalled, and then the database reinstalled. Of course, that means we lose about half of a day’s posts, because the last backup was at about midnight last night.

We can once again thank Ieunuch for coming to our rescue and reinstalling the system and working to get it back up to the old system standards. He will be experimenting in a separate location to see if we can upgrade without further problems. No doubt there will be some consultation with the VB people. It will be nice to have done. Send many kudos to IE – he deserves them.

Thanks for running interference.

I'm waiting for you to upgrade successfully before upgrading mine. Are you attempting to install the whole suite or just the forum software? I installed to a separate directory, and it worked, but that was a new installation not an overwrite of my current forum. Hell, my database is almost a Gigabyte, and that doesn't include a separate picture folder of about 11 Gigabytes. Backing up that took a couple of days.

We've been running 3.8.3 for ages. We can't upgrade to anything 4.X from that platform - has to be 3.8.4. We can upgrade to that OK. Getting from there to 4.0.1 has been the problem. We've been attempting to upload the full suite. Hopefully IE can figure out how to get around the error we get.

Sounds like you need a multi system adapter. 💡

Thanks for the dedication

What do you think about backing up the database right before updating? That would have been a one line command. Apologizing takes more than one line. Which method is more economical?

What can I say...

I am glad that archive is back online.

On the other hand I can't agree more with Yman - before any upgrade the data should be backed up. Information here is precious, and reasonable downtime for backup/recovery before upgrade is not an issue - EA is not a phone system, which must be available 99,999% of time.
