16-Year-Old Hit by Train in Buffalo Using iPod

http://kstp.com/kstpImages/train_st_paul.jpgPolice in Buffalo say a 16-year-old was hit and killed by a train Thursday night.

Tyler Wood, of Buffalo, was walking along the tracks near Highway 55 and 2nd Street shortly before 7 p.m.

The engineer of the Canadian Pacific train noticed the teen and began to blow his horn and tried to stop the train. However, the train couldn't stop in time and struck Wood. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The engineer reports that he observed something on the tracks some distance ahead of the train, and that he sounded the train’s horn numerous times. Witnesses in the area reported hearing the horn sounding unusually often and for extended periods of time.

Investigation indicates that the victim may have been listening to music on an iPod or iPhone type device, and that she may have been unaware of the train’s presence.

Police are investigating the incident.

Lets see, walk between the rails on an active track, so much for common sense, or as they say at the Darwin Awards, take another one out of the gene pool.

Yes I see your point, but simply being a teenager is two thirds of the way to making the Darwin Awards already. I remember my teen age years, and the fact that I am still hanging around is the strongest evidence of the existence of God I can think of. By all rights I should have died several times over. I suspect that if we all got what we deserve few of us would make it to adulthood.

I recall a past Darwin Award Winner:

That guy who walked into a bank to rob it. As he's getting the money from the teller, she tells him about the offer to win a free toaster. The robber smiles and offers to fill out his personal details on the application. Duh

Needless to say, the police were waiting for him when he got home.

Some people don't have "the gift" to be a criminal :)

16 year old Tyler Wood was hit by a train, and the engineer and other witnesses tell us that the warning horn was blown quite a bit as the train closed in on poor Tyler.

The one's who really WANT to believe that this is a case for the "Darwin" award are not going to read what I have to say, but seriously, think about this.

Tyler most probably committed suicide, she could NOT POSSIBLY have been "unaware of the train" even if she was listening to music on her i-phone or i-pod playing at the highest volume. A train's horn is LOUDER than any personal music playing device, louder by several orders of magnitude. EVEN SOMEONE WHO IS TOTALLY DEAF IS AWARE OF AN APPROACHING TRAIN BECAUSE OF THE VIBRATION IN THE GROUND.

This looks to me very much like a "staged accident" that is actually a suicide. Given the information that the victim is a teenage girl, suicide attempts are not at all uncommon in that demographic (i.e. teenage females).

This is not a bad line to tuck away for future use.

I would not make this generalization until the forensics come back and it can be determined if she may have had drugs on board. The ipod might not be the whole story or even to blame for this tragedy.

Train verses human is always a pretty gruesome way to 'end it all'. Much easier ways are out there, including drug overdose. Tragedy in that it is ALWAYS a shame when a young person dies in such a manner, that is, too early.

It is hard to believe that strolling in front of a train would be any suicidal persons choice of method of suicide.

According to the investigator's report she was wearing noise cancelling headphones while listening to music at a high volume. She may never have noticed the train. --FLO--

I can tell you for sure, my youngest son who I love more than anybody in the world can be talking to you but if the TV is on he can totally zone you out, he knows nothing but the TV. Most of the time I just turn the TV off, he looks at me and says something like "fuck you old man, I am going to send you to the best home medicare can buy". (thanks OBB).

True this is tragic, we will never really know what was going through her head other then loud music. I do hope she was happy with a smile on her face when that train hit her because she did not suffer after that first second.

Perhaps she was singing in the rain. Most defineately or at least contemplating suicide. Same thing as driving your car way way to fast, or high risk sexual behavior. Suicide by default, most defineately. Sad...but her choice entirely.

That would make a really great ad for that brand of noise-cancelling headphones!
