Nookie Green

A new resident moved in to the Parrish. Kathleen O'Brein had fiery red hair, was of Irish stock and loved to dress in expensive green outfits with matching hats and shoes that complemented her hair ...and soon the rumour mill had it that she never wore underwear under her dresses.

However, it was not long the parrish patrons became aware that the large victorian 'rooming house' was looking like a house of ill repute, as many young girls lived there and apparently many male suitors visited until the wee hours of the morning every day except Sunday.

The local police precinct had no luck in shutting her down because whenever a client who was not known came calling he was sent away. Nevertheless, the neighborhood residents and mostly the patrons of the local pub nicknamed her "Nookie Green".

Father Flannigan had heard about his new parishoner but had not heard her Christian name. At the pub she had always been called "Nookie Green".

The second Spring after Kate moved in she showed up in her finery to Mass and confession. Of course, the standard confession was heard except she confessed that it had been 3 years since she had been to confession and after pentance she promptly left the church.

Watching her go Father Flannigan turned to his most trusted choirboy and asked him, "Paul, am I mistaken or was that Nookie Green"?

The young lad thought for a moment and replied, "No Father, I think that it was just the reflection off of the waxed torazzo floor".
