Re: Parody of 1812
And my first thought was... Napoleon invasion to Russia???
So much for different teaching of history in different countries.

Re: Parody of 1812
Mine was Tchaikovsky (
lzMGzBKRttU) of course.
The War of 1812 had interesting effects. North of the border it engendered closer adherence to the British Crown and a more concrete local identity both of which were essential to the successful creation of the Dominion of Canada later in the century. Over here it persuaded out politicians and diplomats that the US was a power to be taken seriously in world affairs. A sort of useful war if viewed historically.

Probably most wars fall into that category. The problem becomes when you are the grunt on the ground doing forced marches and getting your ass killed.

Can't really think of the two World Wars in the same light. We're still dealing with the fall-out of those in some ways. And not too well. Plenty of other wars also seem to lack a silver lining.
