My Father ran a self-serve gas station for a few years and his biggest problem was people smoking cigarettes while pumping gas.
Pardon me Sir or Madam, the tip of that lit cigarette is too near the gas tank opening with the fumes pouring out!!!!
Guys who were obviously not bikers on a motorcycle were also dangerous because that pump can fill that little gas tank really fast and then splatter gasoline everywhere.
So were gasoline cans for mowers. You know, the ones you leave in the back seat of the car to fill... Oh, you don't do that? Why not?
As a super-B train bulk fuel transport driver delivering to bulk terminals and gas stations, i've seen just about everything. We've had lots of discussions during our regular safety meetings and emergency response training seminars about all the future Darwin Awards winners that we encounter every day on the job, and i could spend hours regaling you with the idiotic things i've seen people doing at the pumps.
Check out the following:
- A perfect example of static discharge causing a fuel pump fire. Seems to happen to women mostly, because they jumping in and out of their cars while fuelling more than men. If you _have_ to get in and out of your car at the pump, stop and touch the metal of the pump or your car _before_ touching the fuel nozzle so as to discharge any static electricity in your body.

- According to the fact finding after this incident, it was determined that the attendant used the light from his cell phone to check the volume inside the compartment of the tanker. It's believed that he received a call when he had his phone in the tanker and that static discharge from the phone cause the explosion. He died!

- Another in the line of "Stupid People Tricks"... seems the guy on the right decided to find out what the big red button at the gas pump does...

- And my all time favourite (SPOOF) of stupid gas station attendants... yup, sometimes they're worse than their customers!
