Judge: Girl's name, "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii", won't do
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.
Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.
The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.
In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.
New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

What the hell are parents thinking when they give these kids those names??? I can understand wanting to give your child a unique name, one that perhaps sets them apart from whatever the current 'trendy' names are, but honestly?
Some friends of mine named their kid Francis Xavier Wolf (last name). While not nearly as bad as those proposed above, I still have to wonder....

Why wonder. Any parents that name their offspring Wolf can't be all bad
Then again, I might be slightly prejudiced in favor of the wolf.

YEA! My maternal Grandparent was brought up in the home of extended ken when her parents were unable to do so. So, although she was not descended from Wolf, it's clear she was raised by wolf(s).

In my line of work, where you have to put the kids' names on some prints like custom wallets, magazine covers, etc., you wouldn't believe some of the names and abstract spellings parents come up with. All they do is condemn their child to a lifetime of telling folks how to spell his/her name, and having it always spelled wrong anyway.
Who came up with the name "Keiontré" anyways?! (Pronounced 'Key on tray')
Another good one was "VeyShonne". (Pronounced 'V-shawn').

I suspect it demonstrates a certain degree of illiteracy....

When our youngest son was born we named him Pattrick, it is a proper spelling in some parts of the world. Well we also had another reason it made him a triple double. he has a double t in first middle and last names.
When he was 5 he started school, he knew his fill name and how to spell them, his new teacher said no no its patrick, and told him he was wrong, Patt being the son of whom I am so proud argued with this teacher and once again she told Patt his name was Pat. He saw where this was going and told her to get fucked and walked out and returned home..... Mother had to take him back and explain to the stupid teacher that his name was Pattrick.
If you come to MOM this year you will get to meet him.
