Historical Question

Post by Batman (imported) »

For those in the know..in ancient times/before modern surgery anyways..

How did they perform castrations? Was there a safe (relatively speaking) way or did they just grab the whole package and slice with a knife? It seems with the history of Eunuch guards, slaves, and castrata..there must have been a method that didn't kill the victims?

Curiously,

To put it in a nutshell, there were several forms of different recovery procedures in varying cultures throughout history. Most nullification procedures involved slicing off the entire package at once, then trying to keep the victim alive. Almost all of these involved cauterization by one means or another. The Chinese tended to use an herbal bandaging, though.

An excerpt from Charles Panati's "Sexy Origins & Intimate Things" states:

"The ancient method of fully castrating a boy or adult male - removing testes and penis - was no different from that practiced in the Middle East into this century.

To obtain a eunuch for a harm or to permanently punish a rapist, the individual was strapped, arms and legs, to a table. A thin cord was knotted tightly around his genitals, and with a sharp razor, the organs were amputated. The wound was cauterized by the application of a searingly hot poker or molten tar. The mutilated youngster or adult was deprived of water for several days to prevent urination, which could infect the healing region.

Then he was forced to drink enormous amounts of water, until the pressure in his bladder literally pushed the urine through layers and layers of scar tissue - providing him with an orifice.

Not that many survived; the mortality rate was about eight in ten. If he was one of the lucky ones, he began his new job as a docile, sexually nonthreatening slave. This operation was still being performed at the turn of the century on boys seven to ten years old."

Shock was what killed a lot of them.

The Chinese used a semicircular knife to cut away everything. Afterwards they would try and find what was left of the urethra and put a ceramic plug in it so that it wouldn't heal shut. The Romans usually cut off only the scrotum and testicles after they were held by a special clamp. I doubt that any pain killers were used other than perhaps alcohol (and that was forbidden to Moslems).

Probably the owners of those getting castrated

or totally nulloed were accepting the risk of

loosing some to surgical complications. There were

always enough conquered people to supply

the need for Eunuchs of various degrees.

Noah Gordon in "The Physician" mentions the

ancient Moslems in the Holy Land, gave the

penectomized a quill to aid urination. Also if

Penectomy was for punishment, they did not

try stop the bleeding as when creating a total

nullo type eunuch for inner harem duty.
