This story was warmly commended last week by Paolo and having just re-read it I endorse everything he says. It is well-researched (you really can believe this is 17th century Italy)and above all it is literate (some of our "offerings" seem to have come from junior school toilet walls). The plot is well contrived if just a bit predictable (orphan boy having to choose between an empty belly and an empty scrotum). Readers searching for the magic words "balls cut off" will not be disappointed; they occur several times as well as the operation itself.
There is a recommendation that the story be printed off and read from hard copy. This is sensible.
