Boston Corbett

Post by Hash (imported) »

I searched for Boston on the Eunuch Archives but nothing came up, so I thought I'd share this info. Boston Corbett shot & killed John Wilkes Booth, Lincolns assassin, but more then that, he castrated himself with a pair of scissors when he was 25/26.

I suppose the doctor just stitched up what was left, it probably was not pretty. How did you prevent infection back then? Herbal?

Interesting Note on Boston Corbett's castration (The Man Who Shot Booth)

Part of knowing about Lincoln is knowing about those who surrounded him, and those who played pivotal parts in his story …. Thomas P. Corbett is known as the man who shot Booth, but not for much else. The following interesting notes about Corbett were found in Dr. John K. Lattimer’s book, Kennedy and Lincoln: Medical and Ballistic Comparisons of Their Assassinations, pages 66-7.

“[W]hen I read that Corbett had been hospitalized at the Massachusetts General Hospital after he castrated himself, I wrote to my friend the director, the late Dr. John Knowles, to see if he could get me a copy of Corbett’s hospital record …. A week later I had a report of the handwritten admission note dated July 16, 1858, which described the incident as follows:

‘[Corbett] Is a Methodist, and having perused the eighteenth and nineteenth chapters of Matthew, he took a pair of scissors and made an opening one inch long in the lower part of the scrotum. He then drew down the testes and cut them off. He then went to a prayer meeting, walked about some, and ate a hearty dinner. There was not much external hemorrhage, but a clot had filled the opening so that the blood was confined in the scrotum, which was swelled enormously and was black. He called on Dr. R.N. Hodges, who laid it open and removed the blood; he tied the cord and sent him here.’

“Then followed concise progress notes indicating an uneventful course with the ligatures ‘coming away’ in about a month.”

FYI: Thomas Corbett is believed to have died in the Great Hinckley Fire of September 1894. Another eunuch in Minnesota. --FLO--
