In fairness to the hate mongers.....

Now please do not misunderstand me, I am NOT "extolling the virtues" or lauding the sick perverts of history. But I do think, seriously, that maybe the likes of Adolf Hitler and Jerry Falwell, just MIGHT have had a better idea on how the human mind works than the Mother Teresa's of this world.

We ALL of us have those bad aspects of our personalities, the "primal fear" and rage, the hate. Most of us try to control and surpress when appropriate the viscious nature, but all of us have that monster in the back room of our minds. And even though that monster seldom if ever does anything good, it is a VERY powerful force in the human mind. When a "political leader" or more accurately a demigogue ignites the primal fear in the minds of the people, he unchains that monster in the people.

When I viewed the video clips yesterday of a 17 year old Kurdish girl being stoned to death by a mob (posted in another thread here), I was again reminded of just how primitive the human race still is. The "civilized human" of today is very little changed from the "neanderthal" of 50,000 years ago.

While I LOVE to think that I and my friends are "good people" and all that, we are all of us only human. With human frailties and fears, and all of us with that hate monster in our minds. When I think of great leaders, men and women I really respect and wish to emulate, I come up with philosphers like Socrates, geniuses like Alan Turing, gifted and original artists. Yet LOOK at the history, the history of Socrates for example, he was executed by the people of Athens, a city he loved. Alan Turing, it is pretty well accepted that he committed suicide (though some say it was accidental poisoning), after he had been professionally destroyed by a bunch of sick, fear mongering homophobes.

The simple facts are, that human beings are much more easily motivated by fear and hate, than by love. If some fear monger speaks to the masses, and tells them of something dangerous and horrible, (take you pick, the "zionist conspiracy, the fags that caused 9/11 and hurricane Katrina, the communist bolsheviks infecting our public schools, the terrorists who we must "fight them in Iraq or we will have to fight them here"....) it absolutely AMAZES me how quickly and completely people will lose all doubt, suspend any logical reasoning process, and march off to war. It takes only so little effort to spook the people, tell them something poses a grave threat to the safety of their little children... in minutes, they are ready to "burn the witch!" or "stone the harlot!" or "kill the fag!" or what ever act of sick brutality comes up.

Hardly anyone in Hitler's Germany, even dared to doubt their "Fuhrer." His ideals had to seem so clearly absurd. He spoke of a blonde blue eyes arian super-race, yet he himself was dark haired, brown eyed, and no "fine physical specimen." He said that every malady that ever afflicted society was caused by the all powerful "zionist conspiracy." (If these Jews were so omnipotent and devious, why were they so quickly rounded up and killed?) The few who asked questions were themselves quickly imprisoned. The vast majority of the people, just suspended their logical thought process. The limit of their thought on those matters was a childlike faith, "The Fuhrer is always right, he protects us..."

More recently, and closer to home... I see most of the U.S. whipped up into a xenophobic furor. A leader who say "If you are not with us, you are against us." A public that is willing to go along with some unprecedented and cruel "homeland security" (just the sound of that makes me shudder) measures.

History is full of examples, too numerous to list, and throughout every society I can think of. This compells me to think that maybe I am so wrong and off target in my thinking. Seriously, I could very well do better for myself to just "go with the flow." And as I say, in fairness to the hate and fear mongers, it is with very little effort and inferior intellect, they can controll the public.

If a political leader were to appeal to the OTHER end of the human mind they are considered wimpy, naieve, sappy... well there are a FEW exceptions. Like JFK with a few of his speaches, "ask not what your country can do for you...." and MLK's "I have a dream..." but they were both assassinated. Why is it that anyone who inspires me dies?
