You've got to realize that when Studlover and I were growing up in Texas it was special. Today, kids growing up there might regard it as just another state, but then it was the "biggest and the best." We were Texans first, then citizens of the USA, much as Southerners during the Civil War were ciizens of their own state first. Texas is the only state which came into the union as an independent nation. Like the American colonies, it had won its independence by defeating the forces of another country. It existed as an independent country for ten years before joining the Union. Besides, this was primarily an exchange between Studlover and me. You'll have to forgive us for using any excuse to talk about Texas. It's like a couple of old home town buddies running into each other far from home. Home is what we have in common.
Slammr, that's quite true! And in San Antonio we still celebrate the Alamo with the marvelous "Battle of Flowers" Parade which is nearly 3 miles long. It is truly one of the most beautiful parades in all of the USA. That is always held on Friday of the 3rd week of April and the Fiesta Flambeau Parade is on Saturday night with more flare than the day before. The activities are ten days long not to forget the River Parade on Monday which is absolutely spectacular. Then, of course, there are the parties! And do we do in San Antonio!! In fact, 80 per cent of all business are closed for the Battle of Flowers as well as all the schools. We give more attention to this event than we do to anything else probably celebrated in the USA. And rightly so. It is, as you said, our Independence for which brave men who were *not* Texans came and fought. Many historians feel that our Independence and this particular Battle led the way to many social and political values to which we hold dear today.
Yes, Texas is Special. And for you guys who are not Texans, I just wish you could appreciate for one minute what Slammr and I are talking about.
And probably the best way to feel that way is to invite each and everyone to the Fiesta Week, the 3rd week of April, now in its 105th year. So, come on down y'all and we will give ya big howdy and big Texas welcome!
