In this short one-off tale, Slammr gives us a glimpse into what it might be like for a boy to be faced with what is very probably one of a boy's greatest horrors - castration.

You can almost feel our "hero's" pain in reading this.

My only complaint is that I was working on something quite similar...great minds, you know... now I guess I won't be finishing it.

It is very good but I think that in the part where he says that he could get fake balls when he is 18, he should either say that he could also get HRT or why he could not get HRT.

I had no intention to present the story as reality. Obviously, parents wouldn't normally castrate their kids to control their behavior. I meant to get across how I thought the kid would "feel" about being castrated, nothing else-not how he spent the rest of his life. That I leave up to the reader. Whether or not he some day got hrt would have been an unnecessary complication. Sometimes one can explain too much in a story, leaving the reader hung up in the details. I have a tendency to do that at times.

Clearly he is thinking about what he could do when he is 18 so he should think about HRT.

But, if we're getting realistic and considered HRT and anti-androgens, the boys could have had shots to delay their sex drive, instead of being castrated. I wanted to avoid any consideration of chemical castration or reversing the effects of the castration chemically. To be effective, the effects had to be permanent. Perhaps I could have avoided mentioning the fake balls, but I don't think doing that required consideration of HRT.

It is certainly possible to delay puberty with hormone shots. I understand that this is sometimes done in Holland when a child appears to have gender dyspathy. However, since it is intended to allow time for the child to mature mentally before the irrevocable decision to trans-gender the hormones are only likely to be given until the child legally becomes an adult.

How often must these shots be given? Are they ever used on singers such as choirboys?

I am afraid that I have no medical knowledge to impart. I do, however, recall hearing an interview - probably on the BBC - with, I think, Aled Jones, in which it was stated that Hormone treatment had been considered in order to prolong his career as a boy treble, but it had been decided to allow puberty to progress at its own pace.

There does appear to be suspicion in one or two cases that a treble's career has been prolonged in this way, but I would guess that this would only be for about 1 year. I also heard that it had been suggested for the boy who plays Harry Potter.
