A Lower Burrell man posing as a surgeon is facing charges for performing a botched sex change on a transgendered McKeesport man, police said.
McKeesport police yesterday afternoon arrested Douglas Lenhart, 48, of Finnin Road, on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and practicing medicine without a license on the victim, 43.
After the surgery in her McKeesport home on Sept. 12, the victim woke up and realized things went terribly wrong.
"She called 911 after she realized she was bleeding excessively due to complications that occurred when Lenhart attempted to remove one of her testicles," Detective Bryan Washowich said.
Lenhart fled while she was dialing 911, police said. Police have been looking for him since the surgery.
The victim, whom police declined to name, was rushed to a local hospital. She was released yesterday.
Lenhart, who works in a New Kensington manufacturing plant, does not have medical training and the victim did not ask to see his medical license, Washowich said. The victim found Lenhart via the Internet. He presented himself as a surgeon, police said.
Police would not say how much Lenhart charged to perform the surgery.
The detective believes Lenhart might have performed similar surgeries and is contacting other police departments. Lenhart solicits business from people via chat rooms and e-mail, Washowich said.
Washowich said the suspect, who recently moved to the area from Kansas, is "an educated man," but would not describe him in further detail.
Lenhart is at Allegheny County Jail on $25,000 bond and will be evaluated at the county's behavior clinic. A person who answered the phone at Lenhart's home this morning would not comment.

Re: botched Castration (#2 in this area)
I will add the first comments.
1) At least the subject was conscious and had the presence of mind to phone 911. In the TV stories I heard today, doctors and paramedics said she had lost a significant amount of blood and would have bled to death if she hadn't called paramedics gone to the hospital. Imagine the disaster this would have been with leather, ropes, drugs, and bondage... I just shudder to think of it.
2) Gwen Arbuckle is a reporter. I don't know her and she wouldn't know who I am.
3) This is #2 botched castration in Western PA. If I find the old post, I'll add a new comment to it.
4) When we ask people to use a legitimate doctor, it is not for our safety... it is for your safety.
5) I predict this guy will spend time in jail for practising medicine without a license.
6) Please be careful. I don't enjoy reading these stories.
7) to the TV and Newspapers credit, they are not publishing the name of the person involved.

Man charged in botched McKeesport castration

A botched home castration in McKeesport has led to criminal charges against a Westmoreland County man.
Doug Lenhart, 48, of Lower Burrell, was arraigned this morning in Night Court
Lenhart is being held in the
McKeesport police Chief Ron Willard said Lenhart was discovered over the Internet and hired by a 43-year-old transgender female to perform a castration last Friday at the victim's McKeesport home.
The patient paid Lenhart $800 for the surgery, which Lenhart carried out with his own set of surgical tools, Willard said.
Lenhart does not have a license to practice medicine in Pennsylvania, and Willard said he does not believe Lenhart has ever had such privileges anywhere else in the country. However, he said Lenhart admitted to performing similar surgery in the past.
The victim called 911 when Lenhart could not control the bleeding, Willard said. The victim was taken to UPMC Presbyterian and is now recuperating at home.
Police arrested Lenhart at his workplace yesterday afternoon. Willard refused to identify the workplace or the victim. (My comment is that it looks like he left the scene when he couldn't finish - what a rotten deal that was. I wonder if he took the money in advance.)
A copy of the police affidavit was not available because it is in transit from Night Court to the office of McKeesport District Justice Thomas Brletic. Willard refused to provide a copy of the affidavit.

Re: botched Castration (#2 in this area)
Yet another classic example of one who PROBABLY went in too quick for someone claiming to be a cutter. We can't stress enough to use valid medical practitioners. Anyone who is a real cutter, per say, isn't just going to pop out of the woodwork, you know.
Take the time, folks, if you insist (against advice) to use someone online who claims to be a cutter.
The only silver lining I can possibly see to this dark cloud is perhaps the overall medical community might start to take the issue of voluntary castration seriously...perhaps if enough people die...

Paolo I totally agree,
I am so glad I went to a Doctor for my castration and had my regular Doctor on board with it before I went.
We can't stress enough that if you really want to be castrated have a qualified medical person do it. ie a Doctor.
Dr Kimmel is in Philly and will do castrations on demand.
jees people.

Re: botched Castration (#2 in this area)
Hey I'm still planning on either doing it Myself or having a cutter do it. But I also know the risks and what to do in case of problems.
The big issue is having some cutter that is a liar work on you, and not knowing the risks involved and having plans incase of problems.
