Jet Assisted Takeoff - Mythbusters

Post by Dave (imported) »

For their premiere episode this year, MYTHBUSTERS is doing the JET ASSISTED TAKEOFF of a car, version 3

Guaranteed to fly, they say.

And they actually have rocket scientists on the show. Got my vote!

Look for it online or On Demand or YouTube or whatever you use to watch

Just watched it, they had two cars, and the results were - - - - expected.

Adam Savage (the one with the walrus mustache) specifically calls out "Lead Balloon" as one of his favorite myths.

They made a lead balloon that actually floated in the air.

It was spectacular without explosives, fire, booms, bangs, or cars being destroyed.

Personally, their work on the Hindenburg disaster always stays in my mind because that involved models and hydrogen.

And I tend to watch the show and analyze the science and math rather than cheer for the destruction.

When I think of the show I love the Myth of using a tree for a cannon, yes they did it and it worked. Some of the stuff they do I find fault with, its like they don't really think it through but most of the stuff they do is just plain fun.

Ever since the movie Blue Thunder, TV shows and movies have shown law enforcement agencies and spy agencies being able to see the position and shape of humans through the roof and walls etc. of buildings with infrared sensors. The sensors are sometimes in spy satellites which usually can somehow hover directly over any location. (Real spy satellites are in low Earth orbits and travel across the sky at over 17,000 miles per hour.) In one episode of the TV program Threat Matrix, the good guys were able to see the bad guys in a ten story building with an infrared sensor in a spy satellite. They could tell that the bad guys were in the building but not which of the ten stories they were on. That means that in the Threat Matrix universe infrared sensors can see through one roof, nine floors and ten ceilings.

I wish that the Mythbusters would challenge this. I am 99.99 percent sure that infrared sensors cannot see through even one floor or wall.
