For the Superhero Fans

Post by Paolo »

I just watched "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths". I have to say, it sucked.

"Doom" was all right, but I could have done without Cyborg in it.

I have begun scavenging for episodes of the Batman animated series, and found them fairly well done and enjoyable. TAS and New Adventures (Tim Drake as Robin) are equally well written, although NA's animation is not as good.

Superman: TAS is all right, but if you're going to combine DC universes, at least keep the storylines straight.

I didn't think I'd like "Batman Beyond," having noticed it with the series finale of "Justice League Unlimited." But I did. It continues the story very well, and the climactic "Return of the Joker" was just jarring. (This was also the inspiration for the EA stories "Ghosts of Gotham" and "Simon Beyond".)

For the Captain Marvel fans, "Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam" is a thrill ride of a 30 minute epi in which 10 year old Billy Batson meets the wizard and receives his powers.

I can't say that I've enjoyed the "come and go" series "Young Justice". It doesn't follow the comics well, and it deals with "Earth16", in which Jonn Jonnz apparently isn't the sole survivor of the Martian Holocaust. I do, however, like their handling of Beast Boy better than Teen Titans (far too campy) or the comics.

I also haven't gone to any of the superhero live action / CGI movies such as Green Lantern, Avengers, ets. Now if GL had followed Jon Stewart, it might have been good. Never cared for Hal Jordan much. And don't even bring up "Green Hornet"; what a flop!

And what a way to spend Saturday night...🤫

Check out the new animated movie from Bruce Timm. He made all the animation on your list that you did like. This time he has taken on Batman - The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.

It is so well done I had to watch it twice. Part one has just come out and part two is supposed to be very soon. Part one just gave me goosebumps. You would love it.

Have you actually read TDKR? I mean the original comic/graphic novel? Does the animation hold a candle to the classic Frank Miller work? I've heard about this coming out for awhile now, but have been very concerned as to how it would fare compared to the original. Truthfully, I've been scared to watch it, based on how other adaptations of comics have fared.

It is VERY true to the comic. I had to pull my old copy out and compare. I'd say 99% of the animation is lifted directly from the pages of the comic. I didn't miss the other 1% at all.

The voice acting, music choices, and they way Bruce Timm chose to pace the film and to direct the motion, all incredible.

Of course, this is only the first half of the story. Part two doesn't come out for a while. Still, if you are a Batman fan like me, you'll love this. I did.

They're in Cainanite's story "Ghosts of Gotham".

Thank you, I shall definitely have to take a look at it then.

I just watched an episode of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold". All I can say is "WTF did I just watch?!"

Obviously aimed at 6 or 7 year olds?

Having a squeaky ginger Robin was just too much.

Going to watch "Under the Red Hood" tomorrow night. Hope it's faithful to the comic.

I enjoyed "UtRH". I thought that Ra's al Ghul was well done, and his role was masterful.

This was a much better R'as than portrayed in the Batman Beyond epi. "Out of the Past".

I found the storyline to be a bit predictable, though.

But what I thought nailed it was the relationship between Bruce and Jason Todd.

(Then again, I have my own personal failure in much the same way to deal with, so it hit a raw nerve.)

The ghostly flashbacks were quite nice, and the end was, to me, heartbreaking. I'd have to give it a 10 for the ending, and an 8 for the movie overall.

It was nice to see Black Mask squirming, and the Joker being...well...such a Joker without going over the top.

It's been too long since I've seen the comic, so I really can't make a comparison.

Ok, I've watched it, and I really have to thank you, Cainanite. This was absolutely fantastic. I missed the Frank Miller artwork, but then, it likely wouldn't have translated at all into animation. Plus, I'm kinda used to the Bruce Timm look for DC animation by now. Peter Weller was a great choice for an older Batman, and they were very dedicated to preserving as much of the source material as possible. I was only left with one question, and one complaint about the whole thing.

The question: The last line of the movie... the very last person to speak... "B.... bbb.. bbb.... Batman... Darling.." He's uncredited, but is that Mark Hamill? Because seriously, the whole movie (and the second half) would be absolutely and completely perfect if Mark Hamill were doing that voice, since he's the best ever cast as the voice of that character.

The complaint: "Winter 2013".... you #(*@$%#()%)@*%#(&%ing bastards! Make it come out NOW!
