A couple of action movies
I've gone to a couple of movies the last two days. I went to see Resident Evil yesterday, intending to go see Dredd, which I saw today. I had misread the schedule yesterday not realizing the movie was playing at midnight not at noon, so I stayed to see Resident Evil, choosing it because I'd seen all the other movies playing I wanted to see. Big Mistake. I walked out scarcely a third of the way through the movie.
I went to see Dredd today. It didn't have much of a story, but it was non-stop, fun, action, bodies all over the place. I loved it, an hour and a half of comic book fun.

I liked "Judge Dredd", with Stallone back in the day.
So the new one is worth seeing, you think? I like when blood and gore and body parts are flying all over!

Re: A couple of action movies
I'm not a RESIDENT EVIL fan and don't have an interest in the 4th or 5h sequel. I just never watched the movies and don't feel like investing the time anymore.
As for JUDGE DREDD,
I thought the original was like one day old road kill swelling in the noonday sun on a summer day with a visible cloud of flies and fleas waiting for the explosion.
I saw it in late night TV many years ago and really didn't like it.
I will give the new JUDGE DREDD a chance but not in the theaters. I'll wait for the TV version.
BTW - I do not enjoy 3-D because I wear glasses for being severely near-sighted and moderately astigmatic. 3-D gives me headaches.

I liked better than I liked the original. It's remarkable how much this Dredd looks like and sounds like a younger Stallone. You never see him without the helmet, but his mouth looks like Stallone's in the Judge Dredd movie. The girl playing alongside him doesn't wear a helmet at all in the movie, so we can see how cute she is, and I must say I liked her looks; that included the little mole on her upper lip.
I don't see how they could have possibly crammed any more blood, gore, and flying body parts into this movie. We're talking hundreds killed at least. Dredd probably killed more than a hundred himself, while the bad guys killed a few hundred innocents trying to kill Dredd and the girl.

I used to play the game years ago, and it seems I may have seen the first Resident Evil movie, but if I did, it didn't leave a lasting impression on me. This one was just stupid.
I like 3d, but all the movies, including Dredd 3d, are also shown in 2d.

Re: A couple of action movies
The plot supposes there's a "slo-mo" drug which makes time seem to pass more slowly to the drug's users. This is a thin pretext for filming the most violent scenes in slo-mo, so we can savor the death and injury, and gloat over the distress of the dying villains, whose agony is prolonged by the drug. When the chief baddie gets it, it must last at least a minute. This is a new high or low, depending on your point of view. It's so crassly commercial I could only laugh.
Karl Urban plays Dredd, and it's a lot to ask of an actor to have most of his face concealed at all times. We see only his mouth, set in Dredd's near perpetual scowl. It's no wonder they recruited this not so well known actor instead of a star. He embodies the cartoon character successfully. I especially enjoyed his slow, weighty, solemn body language, appropriate for a man who sees himself as the living law. I expect most other actors would have tried for lithe and acrobatic, which would have diminished Dredd's (self-)importance.
Picky me, but I had to wonder why the Judges would ignore the growth of gangs and the drug trade, only to become, er, judgmental when it suits them.
But it was an effective action film. Fun for the whole family. The torture and mutilation will be especially appealing to kids, even if their parents squirm.

I suffer from the same problem: I keep wanting movies to make sense, while I should know making sense isn't a requirement in a comic book action movie like this.
I did get the impression that the judges are, at the best, keeping a lid on things or putting out fires. Our heroes chose to respond to the call about the original murders that led them to the mega complex but could just as easily responded to one of several other crimes. I had the impression - rightly or wrongly - that so many crimes are happening all the time that many of them don't get responded to by a judge. When our heroes got out a call for help, only two judges responded.
For comic book fun and graphic violence, blood and gore, this movie was hard to beat. I'm thinking about seeing it again. It was that much fun.

Want to think as well, watch Funny Games. One of the best movies ever, imo.Slammr (imported) wrote: Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:27 am I suffer from the same problem: I keep wanting movies to make sense, while I should know making sense isn't a requirement in a comic book action movie like this.

Re: A couple of action movies
Why go to a movie called "Resident Evil" when all you have to do is read local newspaper or watch news on TV. There is enough "resident" evil in the world today that the movie is only echoing what is going on in the real world....and I do not have to pay out money to be reminded of what is going on in the world today. One good case in point would be that silly movie on UTube that blasted Muslims. Look at the result of that fiasco.

Re: A couple of action movies
WE go to see movies with blood-splattering violence and gore and stupid car chases to escape the world of blood-splattering violence and gore.
Why else?
