War Horse

Post by Slammr (imported) »

It was a good Christmas movie, long but well done. The theater was full and there was a strong round of applause by the audience at the end. Don't get that at too many movies these days.

Saw it last night. Solid Hollywood fare of the old school. Might have been made in the 40s or 50s. A meat and potatoes film.

What's clever is that the movie doesn't really tell one story. It's made of several poignant vignettes of life in and around the First World War, united by the same horse appearing in each of them. It's so well done that the movie doesn't feel episodic at all. It leaves you with a broad sense of what the War meant to all those who lived through it. I went to the theater wondering that Spielberg had stooped to making a sentimental film about an animal, but that's not it at all. The horse knits the scenes together, and gives many of the characters a chance to express their emotions in ways they wouldn't with a person.

Worth seeing.

How about the spoiler. Is the dog and his boy reunited?

Or the horse and young man ;)

Schmaltz Index?

Hanky Index? (0-5)

Moi, you products of the Schmaltz Factory should stay loyal to your roots. Watch out, or Arnold will crack your skull between his mighty buttocks, and no mouth wash would be strong enough to rinse that taste away.

Boy finds horse; boy loses horse; boy finds horse; boy loses horse; boy...

Sorry, you'll have to wait to see if he gets the horse at the end.

Hanky index: 3 with 5 being a tearjerker. Because it's telling so many different stories of people that are linked to the horse, one doesn't get to know most of them well enough to get emotionally involved with them. The boy and his horse - for me - were the only exceptions, hence the 3. Although the stories of many of the others are tragic, the story takes place during WWI, and therefore, the tragedies are not unexpected.

Schmaltz index: maybe 3.75 out of 5.

I think I might see this on Sunday. Depends on the time and the crowds.

I'm looking forward to it so don't spoil the story.

It's not nice.
