Delaware Co. eyes tougher tattoo parlor rules

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Delaware County officials are considering a tougher ordinance regulating tattoos and body piercing businesses to ensure they don't perform procedures better suited for medical offices.

County commissioners have approved the first reading of the ordinance and could take a final vote as early as Oct. 17.

Health department administrator Joshua Williams said Delaware County's 1998 tattoo and body piercing ordinance was one of the first in the state.

He says the revised ordinance bans branding, skin peeling, tongue splitting and the voluntary removal of body parts that are actually surgical and medical procedures.

The ordinance cites castration, amputation of fingers or toes or removal of full limbs as examples, The Star Press reported (http://bit.ly/raADbi).

"It's trending farther from tattoo and heading to medical procedures," Williams told county commissioners.

Health department inspector Christiana Mann said "extreme body modification" such as that covered in the ordinance is offered and "happening" in Delaware County.

But tattoo parlor owners say they don't see a need to change the existing ordinance.

"It kind of irks me," said Drew Miniear, manager of Collins Classic Ink. "It's not like it's a problem. I don't understand why they're getting up into everybody's business."

Miniear said he has practiced scarification for five years but that there isn't a high demand for it.

He also has done suspension piercing performances, in which a person is suspended by hooks, in the past.

"It's more of a spiritual thing for me and a lot of people I know," he said. "It's not just a shock value thing."

I am thinking about having my "fangs" sealed in stainless steel and slightly extended. Everyone always points out (hehehe) how vampire-like they look, so why not?

Going underground for it is surely cheaper than over $1k/each at a real dentist.

There were lots of people getting fangs at a tattoo convention I was at back in the mid '90s. I'm pretty sure they were having impressions taken and then plastic fangs made that slipped on over their own canines. They looked absolutely 'real'.

I'm having some orthodontoic work at the moment (and you're right, it's really expensive). One of the things I'm having is a replacement canine on a 'snap-on' bridge. I'm kind of assuming that this will be done in a similar way to those slip on fangs I described above, only mine will be a trio of teeth, with the new canine in the middle, and the outer ones slipping over existing incisor and premolar. It will be lovely not to have a denture, but the new bridge will need looking after.

Paolo how does that work? Are you talking about a prosthetic or plating the teeth in place or replacing them fully?

It works pretty much the same as a dental crown. The first one I got for a molar, they tried hard to make it look like a real tooth. I would have been happy with just metal. Probably cheaper, too.

Dentists are like that. When I got my latest crown, the dentist was checking colors against a set of chips. I asked her if it wouldn't be simpler to just have a crown in purple or green. She laughed and went on checking for the "correct" tooth-color. I think I would have preferred purple....
