Apparently a true recounting. In this excerpt/review it mentions:

"We had a whole squad that was brought in one day. They had been hung up by their ankles. Their genitals had been cut off and stuffed in their mouths. Not a pretty sight. Not the sort of thing a young woman of twenty-one or twenty-two expects to see."

Wow. If they were brought in, I presume they "survived" at least into her hospital. I wonder how many came home without their genitals.

I would not be surprised if the VC did not switch the severed packages resulting in another squad members dick in ones mouth. I read another account where a crew from a downed chopper were all tied to it and castrated by the Viet Cong. I watched a movie, "Dead Presidents" where a GI was castrated and had his dick & balls shoved in his mouth. He begged his fellow soldiers to let him die as he did not want to go home with no sex organ. I am sure that was often the case as it is one of the most demoralizing, and humiliating life changing war injuries.

To have one's genitals cut off after being hung up by your ankles usually meant death. You bleed to death from the severity of the wound and or after several hours, your blood pressure rises and eventually causes a stroke. So it's doubtful that this squad had any survivors. The questions are: How long did they hang before being found? How quickly did they receive medical treatment? Who wanted to live and return home a nullo? Now it could be that the Viet Cong wanted them to be found alive to serve as a warning to others. I wish the nurse would have told us more.

"The heart is centered pretty close to the head, so it does not have to pump blood very high," Ruden said. "When you flip it around, though, the toes are four and a half feet from the heart. So the heart has to pump blood to a higher altitude than what it is used to."

This, in turn, means a higher blood pressure. With this risk come a number of possible problems -- not the least of which are stroke and possible blindness as the blood pressure in his eyes increases.

This could be very dangerous because the brain relies on gravity to allow blood to flow out of the skull."

Another thought, what would you do first as a nurse if you received a man into your care who had his genitals cut off and stuffed in his mouth? Remove the penis and testicles? Clean up the remains so that the surgeon could sew things up? That must have been gruesome for a young nurse. I think it might have messed up her sexual life and psyche for some time.

Well, as bad as that sounds I think the other injuries they saw would have been more traumatic to witness and try to help. It describes guys burned by napalm where their skin was so charred that hunks of flesh would come slipping off, etc. I imagine seeing people who's legs look like they went through a meat grinder, missing parts of their brains, etc. would have more of an effect.

Keep in mind too the attitude many women have about severed penises. Like did you see the show where Sharon Osbourne commented on the guy in California who's dick was severed? Basically the women just thought it was funny. In a war context it might seem a bit more horrific, but still I don't think most women would understand the psychological devastation of the guy -- remember it is hard for women to understand a guy's attachment to his dick and balls because they don't have them themselves; since a woman is happy without them they don't understand fully why a man is so devastated to lose them.

I know this woman has been featured here before, but the Viet Cong had a sadistic female warrior nicknamed "the Apache Woman" by the GIs near hill 55 in Vietnam. Named so due to the way she butchered her captives. She tortured and castrated over a dozen of her prisoners before being shot by a Marine Sniper. Her diary recovered after being killed alluded to the pleasure she gained cutting on the men. On a Discovery Channel show recently, Carlos Hathcock, the sniper that killed her stated that she was the one target he got satisfaction from killing of all the 93 he was credited with eliminating.
