I dont honestly see why prisons should pay prisoners any amount of money, even if it is only $12 a month but if that money was not paid, then how mutch could be taken off the prison budget.

They can buy a bar of soap, deoderant, toothpaste and maybe a pair of cotton jersey gloves for winter. Oh and maybe a monthly candy bar or can of sodapop.

The jobs keep them busy and more or less out of trouble. They want the jobs, because they can use the money to buy items from the prison store, often snacks and other food items. If they forced them to work without paying them, little work would get done, and they'd probably have to hire twice as many guards to keep them in line.

I ran a group home once. I paid the clients script, which they could use to buy cigarettes and snacks - which I stocked - for doing their chores. I never had to bug any of them to do their chores. It was well worth the added expense.

If you push people, they push back, whether in prison or not. If they followed your advice, the cost of running prisons would go up not down.

A friend visits Thailand frequently where he owns property. He told me that persons put in jail for crimes against children commonly do not make it to trial.

There is a "Prison" culture as does not accept pediophilia and dispatches justice per Prison culture.

I believe the same is true in where they must often be placed in protective custody.

Sex holidays with children???????? Yuck. Hopefully there are programs going on to lure and capture such people.

The more I hear, the more it seems that such people should just be flushed.

Preferably we had a magic wand that could cure them before they did anything horrid.

I feel a combination of disgust and a little pity. But they don't qualify for "More to be pitied than censured." Pity because they too are victims. Being incurable they just can not be let back into society. Maybe by keeping them all together in their own work camp prison where they can provide some kind of product or service that will pay for their keep, reduce or eliminate the taxpayer burden, and not have public contact, is the best we can hope for. I still don't condone harming or killing them. That just insults the morality of civilization.

I think his succes is based on the fact he wanted to be castrated so he would not reoffend. If it was a forced castration I think the outcome would be different. Good on him for doing what he needed to do to be a better person.

How fortunate for present and future children.

When is it worth taking a risk when a child's safety, indeed entire future, is put in potential risk. It is one thing for adults to weigh in on risk, but another when it might affect the lives of children.

It is the old "bad apple" dilemma. You could castrate and let free a dozen, but the 13th is bad. It is a catch 22. Those who could be set free and do no harm are punished for the deeds that one in a hundred does. Sad, but sadder still is for one or more kids to be punished for a lifetime because the bad one was let out.

At the risk of going too far off topic most prisons assign offenders jobs. They are not paid but receive a small monthly stipend of about $12 a month. Prison budgets would be out of control if the offenders made enough money to pay court costs or money to victims.

I'm talking about a real job where the prisoners make real product or provide a service. The make work jobs in the prisons should got to disabled prisoners. Any funds earned above a set stipend should 1) got to court costs, 2) victim compensation (replacement of stolen property or repair of damages and interest) 3) the prisoner care, 4) prisoner's education (job training) and last 5) prisoner's trust fund (for if and when he is released)

Since most prisons are understaffed and over populated who will be overseeing these projects? I wonder who will keep payroll and check to make sure quotas are being met. Will prisoners have sharp tools to do their work? This would be a good idea in a perfect society but in a perfect society we would not have prisons.

Many prisons do have classes for college credits if the offender will be released one day. They also have Haz Mat training for a good paying job when released. They have the option of earning their GED.

I did notice you now only want to compensate victims who have had items stolen or damaged. This is the last I am going to say on this matter since this was not the point of the thread.

Install bicycles or treadmills; have them pedal or run and generate electricity to help minimize the electricity cost of the prison.

If one were to look back in time when the Egyptians and Romans had slaves, a lot of work was done, with minimal cost and not that many guards. Not that they should be whipped, beaten or tortured. But then isn't mandatory castration a kind of torture?

Anyone who has intentionally caused bodily harm to anyone I think should be placed into isolation and not permitted to come in contact with other prisoners. They are beasts, and deserve to be treated like the beasts they are and never again see the light of day. If anything, give them rope and a cell with an eye hook on the ceiling and a wooden chair. Maybe they will do everyone a favor.
