PORT ALLEN, Louisiana — A convicted child molester has undergone surgical castration in order to be released from prison on parole.

Francis Phillip Tullier, who had faced hundreds of molestation counts involving young girls, pleaded guilty to three counts in 1999 and was sentenced to 27 years in prison. He is now 78.

His lawyer, Nathan Fisher, said the deal stipulated that Tullier would only be eligible for parole once he underwent castration at his own expense.

A sheriff's investigator said the surgery was done Thursday after being delayed several years while Tullier was treated for various medical issues.

The Advocate newspaper reports that Tullier is due for release next week. He will live in Iberville Parish and has to register as a sex offender.

Aside from his age being a deterrent, castration is only good if they can't get their hands on testosterone....even they can't it still is a crime of violence and power, not sex.

Make 'em nullos or at least have their T tested regularly and randomly.

I have no empathy/tolerance for child or animal abuse.

Deserving castration? Maybe in the minds of those who were molested, and their relatives, and in the uneducated. Castrated or not, a sexual predator, of adults or children, has a mis-wired brain. Castration may help, but no guarantee. It is unfortunate that there is no known way to re-program the brain of a sexual predator. Sounds like they just want to reduce the prison population, prison expenses, and are using a tested, but unreliable method of treatment. At least in prison no harm will come to him or someone else. Let free that may not be the case.

He truly dose deseve castration,i would only hope that they wll keep a very close eye on him when he is in the main populaion,and his every move is well and truly observed.

But will this cost even more than it would have to kep him in prison,when he is released will he be housed well away from schools and children, i know that in certain parts of the USA they do this,and i have head that they house them in trailer parks together,what a pitty they dont d this in the UK,even getting them castrated here would be a start.

Without knowing his T level prior to being castrated it is impossible to know if he will be any different sexually. At age 78, the main benefit of castration might be to lower his risk of prostate cancer. At 78, castration to him might have just been a non-event. My fear is that people believe that castration is both a punishment and solution. As a punishment, it really is barbaric. As a solution, studies have shown that there is no guarantee. Remaining in prison is no solution either, but at least it is punishment, and not barbaric. If it was a solution, every sexual predator would be castrated and everyone would benefit.

If it is to be a punishment, then every sexual predator would be castrated. The castration gives the public some sense of ultimate punishment, and so the government gets away with putting him back into the public. This just causes one segment of the public with anxiety now that he is free, and keeps him in a different kind of prison. Nobody wins, except the State which has lowered their operating costs.

Nullorchis is correct. Most pedophiles get off through manipulating their victims and exerting their will over them. A big fear with this approach is that a pedophile may choose to kill his victim. Even without testosterone this guy could still possibly use his penis but he can also use his fingers, tongue, objects, whatever. Castration for sex crimes is simply society's revenge and should be advertised as such. But, unfortunately, it won't stop pedophiles from seeking out victims.

For the people of this board especially, you should always treat the forced castration of sexual offenders with great care.

Should this become publicly accepted, I believe it has the potential to create a link in people's minds that would harm the majority of those who seek voluntary castration. It would be all too easy for the general public to assume that since all pedophiles get castrated, that anyone who wants castration is a pedophile.

For those who disagree, go look at how 'mainstream America' views Muslims, and tell me that kind of backwards thinking doesn't happen.

Castration (chemical or surgical) is ineffective unless T levels are monitored constantly. Testosterone isn't that difficult to obtain.

I have observed some alarming changes in society attitude towards pedophiles. First, more and more relationship with anyone under 18 is considered abusive and paedophile while the line isn't that black and white as it might superficially seem.

More and more people feel that anything sexual with minors is worse than killing a person. It must be reminded that taking a life should allways stay the worst crime. We should not encourage criminals to kill victims in order to mislead investigators!

I might be wrong but i would think that there will be soe sort of clause in his release papers, that after he was castrated that he will not be able to get any testerone.

And that this could be put on his medica; records so that he will not be able to get it from any doctor, but i guess he could buy it from the internet, but by doing this he might be taken back to prison.

But that is only my thoughts as i dont know how the criminal justice system works in the USA, but if i am wrong then someone will put me right i hope.

It's not hard to find a doctor who will prescribe anything you want that

has to do with sex. And the parole system in most states in fairly lax. So

I don't think his arguement is very convincing.
