Transsexual Becomes UK Scrabble Champ

NewsCore - A transsexual internet Scrabble fan in the U.K. was giving the game's quiet image a splash of color by becoming the national champion -- in a bright pink wig.

Mikki Nicholson, 32, from Cumbria, northwestern England, has been playing the game for only five years, but Sunday he beat tournament favorite Mark Nyman, a four-time winner of the U.K. National Scrabble Championships, while dressed in a pink wig and matching PVC dress.

Nicholson, who said he was described by a psychologist as a woman trapped in a man’s body, made a decisive move in the fifth and final game with the word “obeisant,” for which he scored 86 points.

"It was a big challenge, but I wouldn't have entered if I didn't think I had a chance of winning,” said Nicholson at the London tournament. “I'm thrilled to have won, and I can't wait to celebrate."

He will spend the £1,500 ($2,405) prize money on a trip to Malaysia next month to compete in the Causeway Scrabble Challenge. 👏🤘🙏🙏🙏

Purely as a matter of etiquette, shouldn't Mikki's third person pronoun have been "she" rather than "he"? After all, the headline called her transsexual, meaning she had changed sex, she certainly presented herself as female from the picture of her on the BBC website and Mikki's psychiatrist described her as a woman, albeit one trapped in a man's body.

Or does it depend on how she has gone with the surgery? Which, I would have thought, is her own business.

But anyway, congratulations to her on her victory and go girl for the transsexual part.

It shouldn't depend on her surgery. Hell, it doesn't even legally depend on her having had surgery in UK. Here, a surgery is not compulsary for someone to be legally recognised as being the rightful identified gender.

The media is notorious for screwing up the pronouns. There's definitely a conspiracy here somewhere... :)

Well on a sadder note last monday a trans woman got pushed under a train in London at King's Cross. Guess what the media insists on addressing her as?
