As more and more old newspapers get scanned then indexed by Google, we're actually getting a chance to search information from before the Internet. Here are some news I found:

This is an interesting article, and one that I will probably make reference to in some future piece that I will write. It represents the end of an era in San Diego where, for a period of 37 years, from 1938 to 1975, sex offenders, especially those who had offended against children, were frequently castrated before release from prison. Sometimes they were even placed on parole with no prison sentence if they were castrated before sentencing.

After several surgeons originally agreed to perform their castrations and later changed their minds, neither Kenner nor De La Haye, the subjects of this article, were eventually castrated. Both served long prison sentences instead. This marked the end of an era in which approximately 650 men were judicially castrated in San Diego.
