Jupiter
On July 18, 1994 why did the literal minded man think that the planet Jupiter needed an enema?
Re: Jupiter
-Because it was impacted by a comet (Shoemaker/Levy)
or
-He mistook it for "Uranus".
-Jupiter is a "gas giant".

Your first answer is correct. I hate that usage of impacted. What is wrong with the word "hit"? I also dislike the use of impacted to mean affected or effected.

Great word "impacted". Just think of how it feels to have an impacted tooth.
Sure doesn't feel very good.

While I do not hate the use of the word "impacted" to mean one thing or another I think the word "hit" in this case (i.e. "the comet hit the planet") is clearly a better word. Sometimes, people want to sound more official, more educated than they actually are, and they try to use bigger words to express simple thoughts e.g. "The subject related the events to this reporter..." when it would be much better to say "He told me..."
I DO absolutely hate the way most of us are arbitrarily changing our language. For example, when I was a child, "gross" meant 144, or an extreme degree as in "the owner was guilty of gross neglect of the animal..." Somewhere in the 70's I believe, someone decided that "grotesque" was too hard to spell or say, and just started using "gross" to mean something disgusting.
Honestly, I DO TRY VERY HARD TO NOT BE A "GRAMMAR COP." Nothing is more irritating than a pedantic, didactic and patronizing asshole who deliberately misunderstands someone else who is trying to tell them something.
I myself with amazing freakwensee, messpell words and make commun grammer misteaks, and I appreciate it when people who have to read my dreck make reasonable allowance for my lack of edukayshun. Its nice when peopel work to understand each other irreguardless of there differeses.
Finally, above all else, I HATE TEXTSPEAK! There is nothing wrong with commonly accepted abbreviations, but REALLY NOW... when I read something like "i hv 2 c u" then I think, "Yes, and I have to see YOU too! To talk about the importance of clear communication, reasonably good spelling and grammar, and reciprocal understanding!!"

Re: Jupiter
I think hit carries a certain hint of "intent", or at least intelligent guidance.
Shoemaker-Levy wasn't guided it was just going along it's way when there
was a "sudden impact".

I think I like collided. They were both where they thought they should be yet collided into one another.
I agree that hit carries a certain amount of intent.
Of course in healthcare impacted means put on your rubber glove and grab some lube because it is time something is extracted. To me impact and extract goes hand in hand.
Oh and if it is halfway out there is no time for an enema or room for the tube.

Alright, my hat is off to you Tugon, "collided" does seem better than "impacted" (like an "impacted sinus" or an "impacted wisidom tooth"), it is even better than "hit."
I reminded me of the GREAT 50's sci-fi flick "When Worlds Collide." There was not enough nudity and sex in that movie to really suit my taste when it comes to 50's sci-fi. Actually I think "Queen of Outer Space" was better, sexier.
