I cannot find a link, but if you look on the lower right corner of today's (July 6) Wall Street Journal, there is an article titled: "High Noon in Pahrump, NV: Sheriff Arrests the District Attorney." That is nothing new in Nye County where a 2009 review of the local paper shows public officials involved in two bribery cases, a county commissioner arrested for alleged securities fraud and various recall attempts.

The sheriff in Nye County is Tony De Meo and the DA is Robert Beckett. They have not gotten along for some time. Mrs. Beckett is quoted as saying, "I've often said they need a mother to stop the fighting. It's like two little boys."

A sheriff's deputy arrested the DA for misusing public funds. However, that hasn't gone anywhere because Beckett refused to charge himself. Instead he appointed a special prosecutor to investigate abuses. The special prosecutor filed felony charges against the deputy, who is also the press liason, who arrested Beckett. He sent out a press release with his own mug shot announcing he had been arrested. A judge threw out the charges because Beckett did not have the power to appoint a special prosecutor.

The criminal justice system is pretty much paralyzed there because everybody is tied to one side or the other. It is a heavenly situation for defense attorneys. One representing a murder suspect pointed out that "Nye County is the laughing stock of the known universe." Chief Deputy District Attorney Kirk Vitto is concerned, "the sideshow will take over the circus."

Part of the Gordian knot has been cut, though. Beckett came in last of five candidates in the Republican primary. Rolling two vehicles on Father's Day (a tidbit from memory in the Tonopah newspaper) did not help his re-election campaign.

Maybe you're not really over the hump when you're in Pahrump.
