New Computer
New Computer
Uh Oh, child has a new computer. Switching back and forth between my slowly dying old box and the new win7 box. Win7 will definitely take some getting used to. It will take some time to migrate all my software (if it is able), learn this, and whatever. I remember the last time when I switched from 98 to XP - oy, headache. I'm getting old - I hate changes - oy. ask me in a few weeks, I'll be a old pro - maybe. But I like the 8 gigs of memory, 1TB drive, and quad processors. This thing zings along compared to the old model T. Good thing MactheWolf dont have anything like this - he'd have a heart attack.
So, patience be with me, and all who seek help - I will get to it in time.
Damn, and the spare ribs for dinner are like rubber.

Re: New Computer
I jumped from Windows 98 and dial up to Windows 7 and DSL. I agree the 8 gigs of memory, quad processor and the 1TB of hard drive are wonderful. Of course my needs are not as complex as yours but I do appreciate the speed. I can now aggravate people in 1/10th the time. You will master it in no time and it is easy even for me to use. Enjoy and congrats.

Re: New Computer
Can't X64 XP run 8GB of RAM too? I'm running 4 atm, was told 4 was the max, then was told by someone else that 64 bit systems can run 8GB RAM, even the X64.
I'm still on the X64 XP. Is Win 7 as good as its reputation says? Might be time to switch if it is. am thinking of getting an ATI 5850 to replace my 4850 soon, if I do, could also swap over to Win 7.

Re: New Computer
I didn't buy a new computer and was happy with my Windows XP, but people told me how great Windows 7 was, so I bought it and an external hard drive so I could move my "old stuff" off the current computer and re-install it on Win 7. Surprisingly, it took only a fraction of the time to download Windows 7 on my computer--about 30-35 minutes.
Then, I began to install my programs stored on the external harddrive and NOTHING would happen. There were NO instructions for my Seagate external harddrive to transfer the programs to Windows & and Windows 7 told me to click a certain function (which I forget now) and it would be EASY to transfer my stuff!! Yeah!!! Frustrated, I was about ready to hit the "restore to factory settings", but I had spent about $100.00 for the Win 7 and almost $90 for the external harddrive, so, being cheap, I didn't want to do that.
Worst of all, many of my software programs used on the old Windows would NOT operate on Windows 7, which was a disappointment. So, the Norton Works I bought to use as a pc doctor and anitvirus program was NOT compatible with Win 7 as was a few other software programs. One of which is WordPerfect, which I have been using since the 1990's (after my work gave my first computer to me). I am currently using a trial WordPerfect version (30days) before I have to decide whether I want to spend another $89.00 for something else. However, since I am retired, I only use the WordPerfect to write letters to people, address envelopes, and other word processing functions. Why buy all those other spreadsheet, Quatro, and Pinpoint presentations when I will NOT use them!
I am not happy with Window 7 and for me it is not easy. I just don't understand some of the new functions and how it's supposed to make my life easy????? Perhaps, I need to buy a "Windows 7 for Dummies" book if one is out yet.

Re: New Computer
I understand some of your flustration I not only went to Windows7 but the 64 bit OS. It all started when I got a new flat screen monitor, it worked fine but then I wanted to have the best graphics I could playing wow, but the memory would not support it, so I jumped it to 8 gig but in the process needed to upgrade the win7 to 64bit. Now it works great. There is older software that did not work which I have not addressed as yet because I am still using the Beta of win7. As for word processing I downloaded Open Office which is free,it has everything and is MS compatible. I am down to one game that needs to be fixed and the final win7 will fix that so they say. There is a bit of a learning curve but all in all I have been very happy with it, I did not like XP at all, and never used vista, I find win7 to be more like a 2000 upgrade.

Congratulations... I know I would be totally lost if it wasn't for having Bobbie here to help me with the computers.. The world somehow passed me by. Everything moves too fast for me now.

Re: New Computer
Windows 7 will not run some of my software
But is is faster than XP. Then I'm also trying out Linux and it even with WINE will not run the same programs that will run on XP
XP SP2 made my copy of Wordperfect flaky. And I do not have the almost $300 that Microcrape wants for the ultra version with the XP emulator
It sucks big time not to have capitol!

Re: New Computer
I thought Linux was a free-to-all platform, but recently I acquired a laptop that had sort of gone to sleep on Windows XP and I decided I'd look for a Linux alternative and get the computer up and running again.
But every seemingly-worthwhile Linux website was asking me for money.
OK I'm not a total skinflint.
I don't want to download a total crap Linux for free. But on the other hand I don't want to pay over the odds for a bells-and-whistles commercially-presented version of Linux.
In fact I'd rather have a decent free version at first, so that I can work out what it will do for me, what it won't do, what its limitations are vis-a-vis Windows. And (of course) what advantages it might have over Windows.
Advice, anyone?
Many thanks!

I personally use Debian, but that is the matter of taste.
