Timely escape from an eunuchs’ den in Bahuchraji, around 75 km from here, saved an abducted teenager from castration. A woman staying near his house at Dariapur had allegedly sold him to the eunuchs for Rs 25,000 after offering him some sweets laced with sedatives.

After remaining tight-lipped for almost three weeks, the 18-year-old youth, Minesh Bharat Kadia, narrated his ordeal to a friendly milk shop owner, Sharmaji Dudhwala, in his locality.

Bharat Kadia, the father of the tormented youth, has given applications to Dariapur police station, deputy commissioner of police and commissioner of police on December 21 narrating the plight of his son. Cops are yet to act against the accused, Tara Dabgar, 42, a resident of Bawa Nu Dehlu at Dariapur, and her son, Dhaval.

A resident of Moti Haveli Ni Pole at Dariapur, Minesh used to work at a readymade garment factory. He left for work on November 30 around 11 am. When he did not return till late in the evening, Bharat went to his factory. But to his surprise, he learnt that Minesh did not report to work that day.

Bharat’s neighbours also expressed ignorance about his son’s whereabouts. When Sharmaji learnt about the incident, he came to Bharat’s place and told him that he saw Minesh with Tara in an autorickshaw in the morning.

Bharat rushed to Tara’s home only to find it locked. A neighbour of Tara advised him to go to her daughter’s house at Kumbhawadi in Sarangpur.

Bharat immediately went to Kumbhawadi and found Tara with her son there. When Bharat asked Tara where did she take Minesh, she feigned ignorance. “I didn’t see Minesh even once. Someone must have misguided you,” she said.

After a brief altercation, Bharat returned home. But a pleasant surprise was in waiting for Bharat the next day. Minesh returned home on December 1 but looked edgy.

When Bharat asked him where had he gone, Minesh said: “I went to Bahuchraji temple to offer prayers. I took a train back home.” Thereafter, Minesh went into a shell.

Three days after Minesh returned, Bharat received a call. The anonymous caller told him that Tara had abducted his son. “She had sold Minesh to someone. But he managed to flee. Your son is under surveillance,” the caller said before hanging up.

Realising that his son would not disclose the turn of events to him, Bharat pleaded Sharmaji to cajole Minesh to spill the beans. It took him almost a week to convince Minesh.

Finally, Minesh broke down at Sharmaji’s shop and told him, “Tara took me to Sarangpur in an autorickshaw on November 30. I was given some molasses laced with sedatives there. When I regained consciousness, I found myself in a room at Bahuchraji. I was not sporting any clothes.

I saw two other castrated boys in the room and broke into tears. A eunuch immediately came running and told me that Tara had sold me off for Rs 25,000. I was also told that I will have to stay with them and forget my parents.”

When Minesh stressed he wanted to go home, the eunuch made him talk to Tara over phone. “Tara and her son threatened me with dire consequences. I was shocked but determined to flee. I somehow managed to escape and took a train home,” Minesh told Sharmaji.

I realize the amount of coercion that human traffickers can exert on people, especially kids, but if anybody did something serious to me against my will and didn't kill me, I would be ruthless in exacting my revenge.

I guess some people just have a victim mentality. You can't always avoid being a victim, but you can avoid having a victim mentality.

The sad thing is that people in these situations believe that their captors have more power than they actually do. Unless you are fully restrained, if they let you out in public, then you can certainly seek help. And if the captors threaten my family, then well, their family can pay too. Everyone has something they care about, and even the bad guys can be tormented.

Huh? He was naked. He managed to find clothes, money, he doesn't know how he escaped, and that's it? Maybe it's true, or maybe he's been reading the EA and is someone who likes to be the center of attention. Call me dubious. Things are different over in India, I have seen a number of shows about life in India and nude or nearly nude children seem to be on the common side especially around the rivers. I once saw a show that went around to the backside of the Taj Mal and playing was a bunch of naked children..jumping into and out of the river. The train in India are typically over packed and have people hanging on the outside for dear life. Also, he could have stolen some clothes while getting away and beggers are very common place so perhaps he begged for money to get home...

Even if we compare modern rural or suburban India to Suburbia of the USA in, say, 1980, it would not be hard to get hard to find clothes to steal. One of our favorite things to do was take the laundry from the clotheslines then and put it on the line in the next yard over! (We were very deprived back then - no video games, no cell phones, only 4 TV channels.)

I've seen a few documentaries from India, and some movies made there. It looks like people hang their laundry outside, too. Of course, there could have been something to wear where he was being kept that he could have stolen.

Overall, I can believe this story.

This is one of those stories where I would hold judgment until we have much better information.

I remember in 1982 when I was teaching a class in the Asian Studies program at my university – the cover story of one issue of Asia Week (a sadly defunct weekly newsmagazine) was of a 15 year-old boy who had been kidnapped and castrated by a band of traveling eunuchs in India. The cover of the magazine was a full-color photo of him in a brilliant sari. Inside there were several pages (and several articles) on his story and on the history and current status of eunuchs in India. The “perpetrators” of the crime were arrested and apparently badly beaten in police custody. The story continued in the Indian news for some time, gradually moving off the front page.

The final resolution came when the young eunuch confessed that he had run away from home to become a prostitute near one of the large railway stations. As he grew older and less appealing to his clientele, he sought out and decided to join the eunuchs. He admitted, finally, that his castration was entirely voluntary, but that he had suffered regret afterwards.

There are two full-length photos of him on pages 42 & 43 of Milton Diamond’s book The World of Sexual Behavior: Sexwatching (New York: Gallery Books, 1984). One photo shows him fully clothed in a sari (and looking very much like an attractive young woman) and the other shows him nude, with his castration scar clearly visible.

I used him as the ONLY example of castration and/or eunuchs in my class The Sociology of Sex in 1987 and hadn’t really though about him again until this thread was posted.

I highly recommend the new show Paul Merton in India. It is the follow on documentary (on Discovery I think) to Paul Merton in China. He's a British comedian who makes a serious attempt to find the weird and wonderful in exotic locations.

Anyway, I watched the first episode today. He ends up getting honorable initiation into a sect of guru-types that go around naked doing tricks with their genitals (like tying a stick on them and having someone stand on it). So first of all, yeah there are lots of people going around nude in India.

Secondly, in the preview for the next episode it looks like he meets up with a group if Hirja's (there is a scene with him dancing with one.)

In any case it is a very fun, interesting show.

I think the story is factual. The boy has not the sophistication to be a "balloon boy." He was naked,weak and fighting for his life. I hope we can read a follow up story about this as well as other stories of children being abducted by the Hijra. Maybe the famous Hijra "Rose" who is the transexual on t.v. could be contacted to respond.

Just remember that other cultures are not as hung up on nudity as Western countries are...
