Bike Seats and the Ballless

Just broke another bike seat on the way home from getting a rear rim straightened. It was on "Woody", a very custom cruiser.

Far from being cruisered out, I swapped out the rims of the matching girls 3spd to the Raliegh mens "grocery getter". Them Brits know how to build a bike! So while the rim is being repaired I have my Raleigh 3spd "grocery getter". I have four cruisers, three boys and a girl. Throw in the mountain bike, and my collection adds up to five. So if dear sweet Yoli comes out to Cali she could have the ride of a lifetime. I'll will bring them out to MoM 2010 if people would like and Hey Zues advises that safe biking is possible.

Anyway "Woody" sported a black-flame Nirve(POS) seat, now broken. It was comphy on my bone hard ass, just hard enough to have resistance yet not so small and hard as to restrict blood flow. Not so soft that the ass gets lost in a spongy pillow of vinyl padding either, a black cloud so maximus that it envelopes the gluteus minimus, an obstruction to any possibility of relief. A seat that like itself turns the rider into sloppy Jello-y mass. A handicap when all you really want is a handicrap. The seat cost $49.00 plus tax 4 years ago.

So I go in prep'd to raise holy hell. They take the new looking broken seat, look in their data base and pull up the sale from mid '05. I'm told they will contact Nirve and get back to me today. Bet they don't.

My preferance is to replace the seat with another similar model. However, my old flame seat went out-of-production. There is a new addition flame seat with red trim, but it lacks the tassels and flare of the old model.

So controlling for all variables, one being "Woody" makes it out to 2010 Westcoast MoM, another being there are health concious eunuchs who ride, or would like to go for a 2-2-10 miler, the third being personal, the owners bone hard ass, I will fight for the best seat possible fit.

Which seat gives the best ride for a eunuchs softer toohsy?

I swear by old-fashioned Brooks saddles. I have B67 and B67-s on our tandem and a B17 on the bike I ride most. It is sort of a modified rigid mountain bike. Once the break-in period is over a Brooks will last forever and be extremely comfortable for the regular rider. I usually run them with a bit less tension than they come from the factory with and I find they are very much position dependent. I ride mine with the horn pitched up just a bit more than on a modern instrument of torture, err bike seat.

I use the widest gelseats that I can find. I am fat, and it helps. I have to ride a mountain bike because it will support my weight. sucks when it's your only transportation and start to rain.

For any who are interested in bike riding at the West Coast MoM, it's about a mile by (mostly) paved road from the site to the Russian River. About a half mile in the other direction is a major bicycle route used for frequent races, as well as general touring. It's narrow, winding, and has cars that go much too fast, but there are bikes out every day of the year - sometimes hundreds of them on warm and sunny weekends.

Wonderful news...sort of. The bike shop called this morning. They agreed to replace the seat, but no longer have that type, all they would send out was the base model. I will order a flame replacement online and use the new base model on another bike.

So, it sounds like bringing the bicycles out would be a fun idea. I'll just load them in the truck and anyone who likes can ride. If anyone comes up with some ideas on other areas to ride, I wouldn't object to riding Golden Gate Park or driving a reasonable distance for an hour or so of excercise.

Eunuchorn if you need a more comfortable seat just pack everything including the post...just don't tweek my rim...please...
