Installed AVG Free at your recommendation, and uninstalled Norton. So far, looks great. Thanks!
One small question - when a virus is found and put in the Vault, does the option to "wipe" that virus mean the same as delete?

As far as I know, yes.

Since I installed AVG Free, almost all my e-mails are marked as having attachments, even though there are no attachments. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I get that too.
From what I understand, it's attached by AVG's latest when it scans it and adds the text in to tell you it's clean.

I dont get any of that with AVG free, other than a notation to say it has been scanned and is clear. I installed with everything shut down per normal with AV programs, and did a re-boot as Huevon suggested. Works just fine for me.

I installed AVG Free just as you all say I should. I might try it again. This isn't a serious problem - just a minor glitch. Otherwise, everything seems to be working perfectly. I'll also post this question on the AVG Forum.
I use Outlook Express, which adds a "paperclip" icon to messages with attachments. I've noticed the all-clear notes at the bottom of my e-mails. Maybe AVG's notes count as attachments.

I run both 98 and XP machines and I run AVG where I can. The AVG free Anti Virus 7.5 program runs on the 98 machine OK and it also runs Spyware Terminator and Ad-Adware. With the XP machines I am running a trial right now.
I have removed Windows Defender which was quite a large program {and not very user friendly} and I am running the 30 day free trial of AVG 7.5 Anti Spyware. It is more compact and I am finding it very user friendly.
In Britain it will cost £24 for 2 years update definitions plus running the Resident Shield (per machine). The Shield is good. The whole interface is good
I realise I could just let the 30 day trial run and then get manual updates but
I believe I would then need to re-install Windows Defender. Machines don't like both programs installed together. I'm inclined to stick with the very user friendly AVG Anti Spyware program. Do other user's here have their comments and advice for me now to take on board during the trial period.
Does Windows Defender have anything going for it, apart from being free?

I've mentioned it before, but NO.
WD does nothing on W2K. It does very little on XP.
It still lets all kinds of crap in, the scan schedule does not work, and it scans randomly - generally when you want to work and eats the CPU alive. I see no point in having WD at all. It's a total waste.

Echoes my experience. I fully agree.
