Spyware Terminator & Other Anti-spywares
I've been using an anti-spyware program for a few months now, and feel confident in recommending it to others. I've also installed it on every computer my company has sold during the past two months, and have had no reports of problems, or of any instance of spyware being installed on protected machines.
The name of the program is "Spyware Terminator." It can be configured to run on startup, thereby providing full-time proctection for your computer. The resource hit is minimal, in contrast to many spyware scanners. Signature updates can be downloaded automatically, if the user so wishes.
Best of all, the thing is FREE! Hard to believe that something so well-coded could be available at no charge, but it is.
If you're interested, the URL is:

Re: Spyware Terminator & Other Anti-spywares
With the spyware terminator do I still have to use my old virus protection? (I use free AVG version) or can I just use the "Spyware Terminator"? H.
Spyware Terminator is not an antivirus program; therefore, you need to also have that sort of program installed on your computer.
AVG Free is a good antivirus option, but like all AV scanners, it needs to be set to automatically update itself on a daily basis. Also, everyone who is using AVG Free has undoubtedly already received the notice that the program needs to be updated before January 15. After that date, updates will no longer be furnished for the older versions. The new version will still be free, according to information on the Grisoft Website.

Hells' bells, I just BOUGHT AVG7.5...released this month!
Scared me for a moment there!
Thought I was going to have to start waving the light saber at them!

Re: Spyware Terminator & Other Anti-spywares
I tried this one, and much to my disappointment, it bogged the computer down so badly that I had to uninstall it. The idea of a real-time software keeping spyware out to begin with is nice, but it just didn't work.
OS - Win2k pro SP4. Computer - 1.9 ghz, 1 gig ram, AMD boards.
Oddly enough, the task manager showed that ST was not using up much CPU clock at all. However, folders took forever to open, and MY COMPUTER would not open at all. A reboot took half an hour. After uninstalling and restarting again, the system was back to normal.
The initial scan of the system with ST turned up one thing that Adaware missed - stubinstaller.exe which I know came through with a Firefox browser add-on for weather updates in the taskbar. Removing it did not affect the weather function, either. It also attacked McAfee Site adviser and Ramidle, but these were easily ignored.
I would be interested to know the OS and speed of the PC's of those who are successfully running this program, just for the record, because it seems like a nice thing to have. I just have to figure out why it won't work.
But for now, it's just as much of a shocking disappointment as Windows Defender was.

Hi, Paolo,
Sorry Spyware Terminator didn't work on your machine. The sad thing is, it may never work, no matter what you do. The problem is that every computer is unique, and all software won't work on all machines.
I'm wondering if you turned off your antivirus program before installing Spyware Terminator, because failure to do that can cause problems in lots of installations. AV software is a lot like a spider sitting on her web, with her legs resting on the king strands. If any disturbance is felt, off she goes to either repel the invaders, or eat them.
By the way, my Internet computer, and most of the others I sell as starter machines, run either WinXP Home or Professional. The processors are Intel Celerons, 2.53 MHz or faster, and I always upgrade the RAM to 1 GB. The specs of your Win2000 machine are well within the system requirements listed for Spyware Terminator.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Shorty.
No problem.
I'm always ready in case of a software disaster.
You're right, not everything will run on every machine.
The latest version of PowerDVD won't run on here either. Not even to play a very small webres MPG movie. On the other hand, VLC Media Player is great, but won't run on the 3ghz;2gig ram XP machine at work.

Re: Spyware Terminator & Other Anti-spywares
Fixet thank you for your link to Hitman which combines very good software; essential software. I did have CW Shredder but have replaced it with the Windows free download program that does the same thing but seperately from the new Defender program. I think they call it Malicious Software Removal; it gets updated on the first Tuesday of each month. I wonder how many other XP users have downloaded it?
