I used to bitch like hell about my Mac fileserver's 300 Meg discs then a Gig could be got. Hewlett Packard disc array's 1 Gig discs when 4's and 9's were available retail. Then at Sun's 9Gigs when 18's and 36's came out. Or NetAppliance's 72's when 200's were available or now putting in 300 Gigabyte discs when there are terabyte ones.
Eventually I saw the pattern. The storage vendors are always behind the curve. While we geeks are salivating over the newest shiny stuff they're fitting last years gear, or even the year before's. Because they can have confidence it works.
I'd judge today that if you're running 300 Gig FC or SCSI or 750 Gig SATA and find you need more space the answer probably isn't bigger discs but more discs. Maybe a year or 18 months down the line the 1Tb beauties will be bedded in well enough to be trustworthy.
