WARNING drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB drives!!!!
This is a warning to everyone
If you have purchased a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drive (500gb, 1tb, 1.5tb) you must contact Seagate support immediately for a firmware patch the drives have problems and can brick up at any moment...but usually on boot up. My new Seagate 1TB drive would not boot up the other day, and all my data is currently unaccessable ... i do not know if the data is lost or not. I contacted one data retreval company and they said we can get the data at a cost of $1700 USD. Also, if you do have one and it is working backup all your data NOW!!!!! and do not turn off the computer tell its all backed up

I knew there was a reason I didn't trust these newer high capacity drives. I was going to get one on sale the other day, and "a little voice" told me not too.
Creeeeepy, huh?!

Re: WARNING drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB drives!!!!
Im a firm believer in smaller drives, too. A terrabite is just excessive, when large capacity flash drives are so cheap. I have enough flash drives now (small jar full) that pretty much everything I have on the computer is backed up twice (small memory sticks for daily stuff, then backup everything to a larger usb drive about once a month).
Speaking of this stuff....
My computer got utterly destroyed by a website last week. The virus that came from the page was so nasty it was embedded into the OS so much that even the folders on my desktop would do the craziest shit when trying to open them. Entirely my fault, though; my norton was expired and had not updated its virus list for about 8 months. Still, it sure feels like somebody robbing your house. The virus tried valiently to force me to buy the `fix`by only letting my browser go to this one specific web site which wanted, of course, several hundred dollars to `clean`my machine (yeah, right). I had to completely reformat and reload windows, thank gosh i back stuff up. Still... you would think that by having the website address that the virus tried to make me go to would be the equivalent of ``evidence``, and get them shut down, but of course, this stuff is never that easy.
The wild, lawless west; it never did go away, it`s just called the internet now

I don't use the larger discs for the Operating System, either at home or at work. But I do use them for data.
I keep backups of course, but with the OS on another disc you can still boot the machine and may be able to repair a broken data disc, conversely if the OS disc goes it can be replaced without risking your data.

Re: WARNING drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB drives!!!!
I picked up one of the 1.5 TB drives from Seagate. I contacted Seagate and the firmware I have on my drive is fine. When I contacted them I was having no trouble at all, but they had requested all 7200.11 drive owners check with them.
If your drive is affected, then they can provide a firmware update that'll fix it. It was a firmware problem on the drive series, not a hardware problem.
Then again, the affected drives must be what Seagate is using themselves to keep track of inventory. The serial number on my drive doesn't show up as one manufactured by Seagate. It shows up on the drive itself and has a seagate seal on it and since no one else makes a 1.5tb drive, I can only assume it has to be a seagate and not a forgery. None the less, if I ever need to make a warranty claim over the next 5 years I'll probably have trouble with seagate.
Ohh yah, I'm a stickler about backing up the drive. I back it up to 2x300 gb drives. When I start filling it past 600gb Ill have to start only backing up the stuff that'd make me cry if I lost it.

Yes, The problem is specifically with the 7200.11 version! If you have this version contact Seagate immediatly! It does not matter if I had been using it as my main drive or a data drive it still would have gone down.
I spent two days trying different troubleshooting techniques before I started searching the web. At first I thought perhaps a cable went bad or something similar.
Apparently Seagate is giving me free shipping, and the guy I talked to said they have been fairly successful at fixing the problem. However, I am still without my own computer for the last week, and most likley the next week or two.
I am not that dilligent at backing up my data I was counting on a brand new drive lasting longer then this (purchased last oct). I get a big wad of money at the end of the month and going to purchase an external hard drive just to back up my data too....i will only plug it in when I am backing up data..
Guess this just goes to show that you have to be very dillegent in backing up data. This also shows me that all your data can be lost at any time!

Last time I lost data it was due to stupidity rather than hardware failure. I was clearing up some free space and found this folder called .purple . I figured, who the hell keeps stuff in a folder called .purple? so I deleted it.
Come to find out it was my Pidgin log files.
so if you spoke to me on IM on anything in the last 5 years, you may or may not be in my logs anymore.

Besides back-up to an external hard drive, I also use Mozy. They give you 2 Gigabytes of free back-up. You can pay a few dollars a month if you need more. Mozy automatically backs up all your files to a remote Mozy facility. No matter what happens to your computer, you can always retrieve your files from Mozy.

My 750gb Seagate got hit with that. :O Too bad it was already a grinding brick by the time the firmware was available.

My orginal mp3 files alone are just over 8gb and that is not including my picture colection plus other stuff. Plus I am always concerned about what such companies do with the information they are storing.
