Spybot will detect Smitfraud-C but it won't eradicate it. See the thread that I started about it... I understand that there are free fixes available for it...
I use AVG and Spybot Search & Destroy also.
I have never had to uninstall it to get a program to install, but for most installs or updates of known new programs, I turn off my AV and Tea Timer (the real time Spybot protection module).
I also like Avast for AV.
On some of the machines at work, I use Clamwin because it is free and the license does NOT prohibit use on commercial computers.
The free versions of AVG and Avast do.

I have only had to uninstall it for very specialized professional software. Loading was a pain in the patootie. I uninstalled Spybot, loaded the software and then re-installed Spybot. My logic might have been faulty, but it worked and was less of a pai in the patootie. So this was a very speciallized situation that might and probably won't apply to most member.

Keep in mind that just about every single link out there that advertises some kind of free scan, registry fix, virus scan online, etc., IS a scam and plants either viruses or spyware on your PC. I'd imagine you've gotten into one of those.
I'd recommend AVG Free, easily found on
www.download.com
For free online virus scans stick with the name brands that have some type of commercial package available, but your right never allow a site to install anything unless you trust that site!
