Yikes!!! Here comes Ike!!!

I'm just impressed with how big Ike was. They said it was almost as big as Texas, and Texas isn't a small place. In California even a big earthquake doesn't affect so large an area as that. Unless of course it creates a tsunami, but usually the are affect by an earthquake is limited a region like the Bay Area or Northridge.

Well I just feel for all the people affected, because there must be so many who lost their homes. Even just having to evacuate the inundation zones must be a huge ordeal and then there is all the stress of not knowing if you have a home to come back to. I just can't imagine.

Actually, Texiz was too big for poor Ol' Ike to cover. He belted the eastern side of the state and a chunk of Louisiana rather smartly but pretty much confined himself to that, though he WAS a wide one. If you look at a map of Texiz, you'll see San Antonio on the dividing line between the Hill Country (N, NW, and a little NNE) and South Texiz. Well, Ike had no measurable effect on SA. He may have caused a breeze, no more than that, and we got pretty much zero rain...sniff.

It's always difficult to pray for a storm to change course and miss you when you know that in doing so it will severely impact others. Still, though we were so ready as ready can be...Whew!

And furthermore...

We heard from the skipper of BG's offshore sportfishing boat. He left port somewhere in Mississippi and headed back down the coastline. He made contact with both the Coast Guard and other authorities to offer assistance.

So far, all he's encountered is debris, including half-sunk pleasure boats, and lots of it...and one dead body, sad to say. He was going to radio the location to the CG to effect a pick-up but his wife and kids demanded they recover the corpse and transfer it so soon as possible. "It's the least we can do" was their position.

They placed the body on the stern platform and were able to transfer it within two hours. Dear God! Ash(leigh) purposely did NOT ask the skipper the age, sex, or condition of the body. Well done, Ash(leigh)!

The skipper's eldest son and Mrs. Skipper launched the semi-inflatable carried on the bow and slowly made their way along a devastated shoreline. They discovered six folks who had somehow ridden out the storm but had only the wet clothing they wore. Mrs. Skipper and "Gilligan" passed out bottled water and food, then returned to the boat after using the handheld radio to ask the Skipper to relay the GPS data to rescuers.

BG has been kept apprised of the boat's activities and is quietly grateful that he could somehow help, though not anywhere near the scene, by having his boat used for humanitarian purposes.

The fuel cost will be staggering but BG will not bat an eye at that. Thank God he inherited very well. He may be a trained killer in the eyes of the Army, but he has a kind heart...until you cross him.

Their showing pictures of the devastation on CNN. From what I can see I just hope no one were in those homes when Ike hit. I don't know how they are going to rebuild, especially in this economy.

HOUSTON – More Hurricane Ike relief was on the way for evacuees Tuesday as tens of thousands of people waited for food, water and ice, for the electricity to return to their homes or for their first hot meal and shower.

The number of distribution centers was to be quadrupled to 60 by the end of the day to deliver food, water and ice. Still, for some, the wait for a return to normalcy could be days. For others, it could be weeks.

It could take weeks, for NO its taking years.

I just can't believe how many people rode out the storm on Boliver Peninsula and Galveston. There is NO high ground there as it is all just a few feet above sea level. Fucking Idiots. If people didn't get there kids to safety, they should go to jail and loose parental rights. Pure child endangerment. Anyone who had to be saved (at the risk of responders) from mandatory evacuation areas, should go straight from the coast guard choppers to JAIL.

No one has the right to put kids in that kind of danger. The only exception if there was no way for them to evacuate, but it looks like the state of Texas went to great lengths and did a good job of helping people get out of the way of Ike.

There really is no end to stupidity but I hope they don't have to create a family category for the Darwin awards
