Has anyone seen this documentary? It's about men who fall in love with silicone sex dolls.

Re: BBC America Documentary: Love Me, Love My Doll
I feel for these guys because they can't seem to find a partner in life. I guess that is a challenge most of us face. I know that for some people it just isn't going to happen, so perhaps these dolls fill a need for them. On the other hand the stigma associated with collecting these dolls must make it even harder for them to meet other people, especially is they quit trying.

I meet many men and women who are alone in life. That always saddens me. A bit of empathy from all of us might help. But watching that video is painful.jemagirl (imported) wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2008 8:14 pm I feel for these guys because they can't seem to find a partner in life. I like your post. Thanks.

That documentary is a good piece of journalism. Did you notice how they played it straight and did not send it up for a cheap laugh?
The outcome was that the viewer felt saddened by the mans trait, rather than scornful. It left us with some sympathy for the man even though his affection for his doll was a touch creepy. His sincere, gentle manner gave the impression that he would make a good consort for some young woman, if only he could find her. However he must have some personality defects: like how come he is still living with his parents?
Is it really feasible and acceptable to love a doll? That doll struck me as attractive but its inanimation was corpse like. Necrophilia anyone?
However if the doll were animate and acted something like a real woman it could easily become a lot more acceptable. In a book called Love and Sex with Robots author David Levy argues that if the doll were attractive (they already are) and acted more like a real live woman (the experts are still working on that) then many men would find that such a robot would meet all their relationship needs.
That may seem outrageous and at first I didnt believe it. But then I remembered that as a young teenager I would get a hard on merely from looking at nude statues and even naked dummies in shop windows. One of those dolls could have made me come in my pants, hands off. At that stage of course the real thing was inaccessible. But if an adolescent had some pleasant experience with a lifelike robot then it could easily affect his sexual orientation for the rest of his life. Hed be a robosexual.
Likewise there would be menbots for the ladies and even kiddybots for those who are into that sort of thing.
A brave new world indeed.

I wonder, are these relationships not similar in some way to the ones we have as children with our stuffed animals? Maybe these men are in some way returning to the memory of a happier and safer time in their childhood. If that is the case the only difference is their age and the sexual aspect of the affection.
As far as living at home goes there can be many reasons including difficult economic situations, caring for an elderly parent, or just different cultural norm. In some cases all of the above may apply. In my case it has to do with economics. It is very difficult to make enough to live on your own in the Bay Area. Most people share an apartment or flat with other renters, but as for me I would rather live with family. Still in the case of the gentlemen in the video one does wonder if there might not be something more to it.

I do feel sorry for those poor guys (I watched the video some time ago on Google Video), but I am extremely creeped out by it as well. That kind of behavior seems like a prelude to serial killings to me.

Oooh, so you guys like THAT one? Try THIS one on for size: There is a new psychiatric diagnosis called the Truman Show Delusion, in which people suffering from it think they are constantly being watched by unseen people, that their families and co-workers have all been replaced by actors, etc. The human mind is a curious thing...here's the link:
