Book Rev: Peter PanzerFaust

Peter PanzerFaust, a graphic novel by Kurtis Weibe and Tyler Jenkins

I'm never sure of war stories anymore. So this gets a 4+1/2 instead of a 5.

It is startlingly and fascinates. But it bothers me. War always bothers me.

Peter's words -- "second window to the right" ...

That's the way that the adventure begins. In Calais and by the end of the story, in Paris.

There is Peter, Tootles, Wendy, the orphan boys, and Captain Haken (Hook) in a story that's haunting and different. This is the German invasion of France in the 2nd World War.

A story or war and remembrance.

Very inventive.

Volume 2 arrived today. It's chapters 6 through 10 and it's titled "HOOKED"

Captain Haken arrives, sans hand, sans heart -- a bastard and nazi true believer in occupied France.

This is the story of Peter Pan in dark terms so beware. It is excellent story-telling.

That art is dark and suited to the subject of war.

So if you do believe you can fly and have never doubted then take a journey to a strange and harrowing Neverland. The two volumes are wonderful. I'm looking forward to the third.

(A note on structure I hope holds true through the volumes...)

(In each volume, a writer who identity has not been revealed interviews some old man or woman about Peter.)

(So each volume is told from another person's eyes as heard through a writer's ears.)

(That makes for a fascinating framework to tell a story.)
