This weekend's outage.

Some of you may have noticed that the Archive was acting rather strangely this past weekend, and was even down for a matter of time. Contrary to popular opinion, this was NOT a result of anything I did.
I want to emphasize that again. I did not cause the outage. Heheheh.
What actually happened is that the Archive was subject to a DDOS attack originating in Germany (the IP address is on file), and it required the expert attentions of Jon (our server guru) to properly filter and block the attack. No word on why the attack happened, or who caused it though.
Sadly, the archive is as vulnerable to these kinds of attacks as just about any other website out there. You will be happy to know that it seems things are back to normal, and with luck that will be the end of it.

IE--I think I speak for everybody using this website, in saying thanks for keeping the whole thing creaking along. Amazes me that you, Paolo, Krister, Plix, and others do all this for free. I would charge at least $75 an hour. I guess what you guys are doing, comes from a sense of duty to the community. Unfortunate that some users yell at you because of the occasional glitches

Indeed, what others are saying. Thanks, IE for spearheading the efforts, and getting the other help involved that was needed, as well! There's a reason you're number 1: As compared to some others, you DO know Jack Schitt,,,,,:D

I may not know that much about servers, even after all this time, but I know enough to know when something screwy is going on and when to flag an alert. The honours for solving this should rightly go to Jon, the BME server Guru. He's the one who actually solved our problems. I just read the metrics on the server and knew something really bad was happening.
Now if there happens to be some silent dot-com millionaire reading this who is favourable to the EA, perhaps they could toss a few grand my way so I can get some schooling in PHP/SQL/Server tech? Heheheh.

Just a little reminder that we are using the ever vulnerable internet. I sometimes think we are talking in a salon somewhere, privately and face to face, but, alas, we are not. IEunuch handled the interruption with his usual competence. --FLO--

Glad to see things back to normal this Monday morning. After all the posts about troubles with BME I was afraid they had shut the Archive down for good. Don't know where I'd go if you guy weren't here.

Thanks for clearing up the cause of the interruption.
I was away and only heard vague rumors that the Boards were offline. I automatically assumed the infamous Red Nun was skulking around looking for verbal offenders in the night and accidently spilled "holy water" on the Message Boards keyboard.
I never realized "holy water" was red and had a flavor of port.
