Jason Goodwin's Edgar-winning debut novel, 2006's "The Janissary Tree," introduced Yashim Togalu, a sultan's spy in 1830s Istanbul. Yashim is a formidable and crafty hero; he's also a eunuch, but you'd be a fool to underestimate him just because of his, well, differently-abled self.
