WARNING!!

I'm going to start testing things out again on the server over the next few days. Things seem stable at the moment, but I cannot guarantee they will remain so.

You will notice changes around the rest of the site, as well as the occasional error or hiccup. Potentially, the site might even go down again temporarily. However, I need to do some of this through trial and error to see what the server can take without blowing up.

Some of you may already have noticed two little things, namely on the main story page, there is now a link back to the main page, and the "Most Read Stories" category has been removed. In its place for the moment is a randomly-generated set of five stories from the entire Archive. If you're looking for something different, why not start there?

As well, for the tech-savvy among us, the Archive now has it's very own RSS feed for new stories. The link is at: http://www.eunuch.org/Alpha/feed.xml

If you know how RSS works, feel free to add the feed to your browser, for a quick link to the 10 newest stories on the Archive. In a day or two I'll put up instructions on how to add RSS feeds to your browser's bookmarks, or perhaps another user here can provide some for everybody.

I am ***NOT*** complaining, but rather just letting you know that when I clicked on the URL in your above posting that a whole lot of computer gibberish showed up on my screen. I don't know what RSS is or does, but if that is it, then I want to avoid it like the plague.

The RSS feed link should look like "computer gibberish" -- it should be an XML formatted description of the feed.

To use it, you need an RSS feed reader, or a browser with integrated reader like Firefox.

We are probably making progress, but I wouldn't know for sure. I couldn't even tell you what is wrong. I use Firefox as my browser based on recommendations from friends. And I checked that link again based on this additional information, but with the same [non-successful] result. The error message at the top of the computer gibberish says "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."

I have not a clue what that error message means, what I should do (if anything), or if I should even concern myself because I still do not know what "RSS" is supposed to help me achieve.

It's an XML file, it appears for an RSS feed.

Generally a plug in or web page is required to decipher the gibberish, the link should be pointing to a php or asp file to decipher it and write it out as html.

The correct link above should read:

http://www.eunuch.org/new_story_index.php

Then you can see the stories etc.

TClosetGirl, you are a champ!!!! Thanks. With the URL that you provided it did work. I saw the stories on EA. I clearly do not understand the technology (and you obviously do, but I won't let that secret out to anyone, shhhhhh). At least it works for me now.

Yes, that will get you to the story section. However, the RSS feed link, when added to Firefox's bookmarks, or another program that can process RSS links properly, will get you an always-updated list of the last 10 stories added to the Archive.

If you are running Firefox, to add the feed properly go to "Manage Bookmarks", then 'File', 'New Live Bookmark'. Enter in whatever name you want, and for feed location cut and paste

Then hit Ok, and presto, you have a new bookmark that always shows you the newest stories.

(There may be a way to do this in IE, however I don't use IE. Perhaps someone who does could help explain that procedure)

There probably is a RSS decoder for IE but I have not looked much yet. Will Soon. For those that purchase Vista, IE7 will come with it's own that is if MS is not lying again.
