Warning! Virus Alert

Warning,

In case you have not heard there is a new virus going the rounds which is VERY destructive.

It appears to have started from Europe and will mail itself to everyone in your address book.

The subject is along the lines of: 'I saw this screen saver and thought of you' but it contains a spelling error.

I cannot be more specific because, so far, touch wood, I have escaped it, but the company I work for which is a large computer services company got hit. As soon as it was spotted, they disconneted the service so that it could not get out again, but it was happily propagating itself on our intra-net so that it was almost impossible to send a legit one.

Be very careful, apparently it can delete virus checkers if it gets loose.

Regards,

Colin

Believe me, guys, this one is a killer!

I am a Network Admin for a medium sized company (about 2.000 computers). When I went in this morning at 6:00 to check the mail server I discovered that "Gone.scr" had already been caught over 30 times. and five of them got through! I spent the entire day running around killing that thing!

I have also heard that this virus can propogate via ICQ and IRC, so beware all you chatters! I do not use either one very much so I am no expert, but from all I have heard this one is even more deadly than the Love Letter!

Chalieje,

Well done to you.

But if you think you had problems consider the support people at my co. The company has around 23,000 employees in its address book not to mention all of our clients. This thing was trying to mail itself to them all, several times over.

Fortunately, it was the author of its own downfall since it generated so much traffic on the two servers it did manage to infect that they blocked all of the channels and as far as is known none of them actually got out - Phew!

LOL

Jenny

.................................

I must now add to my first message about viruses the virus I have picked up has now disabled my norton virus checker completely and I am now informed that a complete clean and reinstall is now the only thing that will cure the problem.

I tried deleting the remains of norton and reinstalling it but it was deleted again as soon as I finished

Jenny.

This new danger should just make everyone aware of the need to install anti-virus software not merely to protect themselves, but to protect others. As far as I'm concerned a person who uses e-mail and doesn't spend twenty bucks to install such protection not merely for himself but for others is like someone with a communicable disease who doesn't try to protect others. In today's virus-roamed world installing anti-virus software is (in my view) a moral responsability.

Just remember there ARE web sites that WILL infect your computer with a virus thourgh java, activeX, and HTML if your broswer hasn't been patched.... and sometimes even running anti-virus program will not help, as you let a program install from one of these sites. Or you could of downloaded a program from a WARZ site that was infected.

Rules not to get infected, with Unix, BSD, of Linux Never browse when you are loged in as ROOT.

With Windows, Be current with all patchs. Do not use IE. Never down load programs from WARZ or presonal web pages. Email never blindly open email attachments, make sure in Folder Options tab: Veiw: hide File extensions .... is unchecked. This allows you to see picture.jpg.exe type file names that could infect your computer if opened. If using outlook disable active X controls.
