In Salman Rushdie’s latest book, Joseph Anton, the story of his life while hiding from the Iranian fatwa against his life, he describes a “foolish word game” of creating book Titles That Weren’t Quite Good Enough. (page 364)

Rushdie gives as examples:

Mr. Zhivago

A Farewell to Weapons

For Whom the Bell Rings

Two Days in the Life of Ivan Devisovich

Mademoiselle Bovary

The Story of the Fortsytes

The Big Gatsby

Cab Drive

Love in the Time of Influenza

Toby-Dick

Snag-22

Raspberry Finn

To which I would add:

Les Masaratis

The Makioka Brothers

The Sun Also Sets

The Decline of the East

The Cousins Karamazov

Any further suggestions from the creative folk here?
