The 50s

I was reading a review by Dorothy Rabinowitz of 'Wives in Beehives.' I think the core of her criticism was that the program was kind of a Real Housewives of New Jersey in girdles and beehives. It focused on shallow characters while, in her opinion, the 50s were 'a time of incomparably greater literacy, a decade unequaled for its outpouring of great American novels.'

I have to admit to being a bit of a literary slug, especially at a young age when I knew everything. I certainly never appreciated that happening around me at the time. I was wondering if some of our more artsy-inclined members would agree with her assessment of the '50s?
