I saw two trailers today -- both of movies for Christmas Release.

One was the movie version of LES MISERABLES which is being made using a different technique than musicals are usually made... I'm going to take a couple hankies to this and cry a lot. Even the music does that to me. Just the look of the scenes in this adaptation thrills me. I look at it this way - Dr Zhivago is the greatest Russian love story and Les Miserables is the greatest French love story not in opera. And I say "not in opera" because La Boheme is set in Paris and the Bohemians ahve my heart for all time.

the other is THE HOBBIT which I've avoided ever since I read the LORD OF THE RINGS and discovered Tom Bombadil who I consider the stupidest character in all of literature... I mean after finding a character that bad and then suffering through the rest of the books, I swore off the world of Hobbits in literature. The three movies are well done and thrilling. I might still boycott this because they are showing it in two parts and I think that's a "reach into the wallet" scam.

Somethings to see at Christmas

Worse...they changed it up and The Hobbit is now a TRILOGY! I was dubious of it being shown in 2 pieces, and now I'm just upset by it. They're adding characters from other Tolkien books to fill it out and I think inventing a few (as well as bringing back from LOTR).

I had REALLY been looking forward to it after the other films too. Especially when Peter Jackson decided to direct.

I remember, at least i think I remember reading the Hobbit 50 years ago or so, it as I recall was a short story, and would fit in one movie without any problem, so I can guess they needed more special effects and a three movie format so they could make more money on it.

Now if people just don't go and see it, it will fail and then they can cut all the crap that was not in the book and release the REAL Hobbit movie based on the book, what a novel idea.

When the Lord of the Rings ended and my family and I were in watching "Return of the King" they had a trailer for "Chronicles of Narnia" and my Mother, now 90 this year, said to remember to take her to that movie because she liked those type of adventures.

So I will probably haul myself and her to all three movies.

I would expect you to do no less, after all its for mom.

The book, at 316 pages, is longer than I remembered, but it has been 40 years since I read it. At that length, I can see making two movies out of it, and considering that Peter Jackson is making the movie, I have no doubt that after seeing the first installment, we will be eagerly awaiting the second and the third.

I was a huge fan of LOTR. I will certainly be in the audience the first day it plays.

I very much enjoyed LOTR in theaters, not so much on DVD.

I have to agree with Dave, there's no reason for 3 movies spread out like that. Get it done in a single movie with an intermission if you have to.

Anyway, I won't be going to see it.

It's now pushing $100 for 2 people to go to a movie (gas, ticket, snack bar) here, and it's never worth it.

So long as they keep selling tickets they will continue making sequels. Wouldn't surprise me if in 20 years our children are watching "Freddy Kruger vs Sauron, the New Ring Wars."

I think that's why JK Rowling ended Harry Potter the way she did and now refuses to write anything else in potter-dom
