Downtown Detroit and suburbs?

There is a potential for an interview for a permanent job in downtown Detroit. I am nervous about possibly working there because of the city's very high crime rate. I gather downtown is fairly safe. I'm sure some suburbs are safe. Does anyone know anything about Detroit? Is it politically liberal but socially conservative?

Danya you shouldn't worry about being in the downtown area during the daytime. However, I wouldn't advise being alone on Woodward Avenue downtown at midnight. I would suggest you choose to live in one of the northern suburbs, near a major bus line if you don't have a car. If you have a car and choose to drive to work you might find parking to be a little expensive unless your company has it's own private parking lot. I would still advise you to live in one of the better suburbs.

Thanks for your help, Mac. The opportunity fell through, so I will be staying put for now.
